There Maybe Direct input emulators out there if you look
http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/
First, I tried swapping the controls for Jump (A) and Melee Attack (Y). This enabled me to attack in-game, but not jump. I then tried remapping the jump key on my keyboard to a different key (I used the = key) in an effort to use Xpadder or joy2key to emulate that key on my gamepad, but pressing that key results in Dante attacking.
I tried both of these both with and without x360ce, getting the same results each time. I'd write the issue off as the buttons on my controller just not working, but the input is being recognized both by windows and by the game itself. I am thoroughly stumped with this one.
EDIT: Looking more closely at x360ce, it seems like it works the other way around, translating Direct Input to Xinput.
"Yea, this game a pain to configure a gamepad with. I did it the other day and it involved a lot of trial and error. I looked a your screen shots and will tell you where you need to make changes. 1st you need to make a custom config with the profile editor then:
L1=button7, R1=button8, L2=button5, R2=button6, L3=button11, R3=button10, start=button12, LstickUP=Rz-, LstickRight=Ry+, LstickDown=Rz+, LstickLeft=Ry-, RstickRight=Dial+ and finally RstickLeft=Dial-
I saved my profile as DMC3 then hit the enable button. And that was just to map the buttons to the gamepad so that they match the those to DMC3 gamepad configuration program. To make the controls as they are in the PS2 you'll have to go to the "in game" gamepad config screen and set them up like this:
change gun= 5 change devil arms= 6
devil trigger= 7 lock-on= 8
item screen= d-pad up melee attack= 1
map screen= d-pad down shoot= 4
equip screen= d-pad right style action= 2
file screen= d-pad left jump= 3
change target= 11 default camera= 10
taunt= 9
I hope this helps you out."
