XBOX360 controller fix
EDIT/UPDATE: As this is a pretty old post you might not get it to work this way. There are plenty of comments which help most people fix the problem.

UPDATE[/b:] Harryorlsen posted this link to a potential fix:
Link

After goggling and checking this forum repeatedly for a gamepad fix. The only thing that worked for me was using part of this guide[www.theprohack.com]. Only follow the following steps (refer to the guide if you need pictures)

Install Xpadder from this link[majorgeeks.com]. (Run in vista SP2 compatability mode).

Click on the controller icon to create a new profile and walk through the tabs and enable all buttons on your gamepad.

Go to the finish tab and click close.

And instead of only mapping wasd like the guide tells you to. Just bind all keys to your gamepad like (there used to be a link here which is now dead).

Don't forget to save your profile!

When launching the game keep your gamepad disconnected, otherwise it'll detect your gamepad. Once you've launched the game connect the pad and you'll be able to play.

If you want to change any keys you should be able to do it in the game itself from then on.

Easier way to fix is to go to steam folder \steamapps\common\Devil May Cry 3\DMC3SE.ini

Open with notepad. Delete all the text. Paste in

#----------------------------------------------------------------------
[XBOX 360 For Windows (Controller)]
START = 7
SELECT = 6
CIRCLE = 1
TRIANGLE = 3
SQUARE = 2
CROSS = 0
L1 = 4
R1 = 5
L2 = 11
R2 = 12
L3 = 8
R3 = 9
L<->R = 1

Then use xpadder to map the left trigger to Q and the right trigger to E.

The GameFAQ's thread most people find when they google "DMC3 xbox360 controller" or whatever has the wrong device name, which is why it doesn't work for some people, but it does explain how to find the right name and change it.

This didn't work for me, the left analog stick and triggers didn't work and I would've had to use the right one for walking.
Embin when I first added the lines from Tobias it did the same as you, then I remembered that the controller name changes with each new version. The new name is "Controller (XBOX 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows)" once I changed it the controller worked flawlessly. Try

[Controller (XBOX 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows)]
START = 7
SELECT = 6
CIRCLE = 1
TRIANGLE = 3
SQUARE = 2
CROSS = 0
L1 = 4
R1 = 5
L2 = 11
R2 = 12
L3 = 8
R3 = 9
L<->R = 1
Is there a working controller app like this? When I am using this, and set everything up, the program confuses the buttons and confuses the controls...

Devil May Cry says my gamepad is not compatible regardless what I set its .ini too.
The analog sticks arent switching on my end. using Win7.

That's weird, I use windows 7, did you make sure to wait with plugging in?
But you can get the X-Box 360 controller for windows working with Devil May cry 3 ?

Thanks Embin, made this old port playable for me now on my 360 controller. Nice bonus is I can toggle turbo on my gun button with Xpadder so I can give my thumb a rest.

Is there any way to fix the controls for Xbox 360 controller w/o downloading an external program?
THX really helped a lot!!!
Very usefull, ty
man this works like a charm thanks
Thanks mate, you helped me a lot, I was disappointed after i bought the DMC 3+4 bundle and couldn't play it with my 360 controller, because keyboard suxx, im glad there are some helpfull people out there *THUMBS UP* :))
I've tried this, however xpadder doesn't work. I try to assign each key to a keyboard letter and nothing happens. Xpadder just stops working.

sweet mother of god this game is awesome but the PC port sux so much donkeyballs, I have connected 3 gamepads and none of them seem to be compatible with this, the movement just doesnt work and wow coming back from playing the excellent DMC4 and DmC on the PC which both feature tight controlls and are fully supported by the Xbox 360 gamepad I must say, how the hell do you guys even play DMC3 on your PC ?
