I suggest you play the PCSX2 version, but you'll have to withstand the input lag and some graphical glitches. One upside to the PC port is the use of trainers and mods.
Then there is Devil May Cry 4, which is a much better looking game and a much better port, expecially if you play in DX9 mode, DX10 isn't graphically any better so ther is no point, just uses more resources, but more importantly you can use any controller.
Capcom gave the game over to another Japanese company named "Sourcenext." They are the ones who were responsible for the port. Ubisoft only distributed it and had nothing to do with the actual porting. Sourcenext for what ever reason, chose not to include alot of special effects, shading, and lighting in the PC port. They are also missing in the HD collection and when emulated using PCSX2.
The only way to play DMC3 with all the original effects, shading, and lighting, is the native PS2 release. These effects seem to be PS2 specific, and can only be done using the PS2. I don't know this for certain, but it seems likely since the HD collection also was missing these effects. Why would they not put them in there unless there was some technical limitation.
The PC, HD collection, and PCSX2 versions are all the same. There is no difference between them. The effects are missing on all of those. The only true way to play the game the way its suppose to look, is with the original PS2 copy.
So, you have a trade off to choose between. Either you have DMC3 look nice and sharp with the increased native resolution with no effects, or have it looking blurry with all the effects intact. I would personally, go for the original PS2 release. There are certain effects that just simply deter from the artistic look of the original PS2 version. If you google it, you will find out alot more about it.
When it comes to controls and using a controller, if you look at the survival guide pinned at the top of the DMC3 forum, you should be perfectly fine. It also shows you how to increase the resolution above the maximum 1600x1200. Most think the resolution is "locked", but fail to realize how to navigate around the menus using WASD and JK.
I just beat mission 1 using just the keyboard, and it was very playable. I played it just to verify if the effects are truely missing, even in the Steam release, and they are for sure. The same as in the Resident Evil 4 HD release. The Resident Evil 4 HD on Steam also is missing graphical effects. The only way to play RE4 with all the original graphic effects is to play the Gamecube/Wii version.
The DMC4 PC port is well done though. Its legit. I recommend you get DMC4 instead.
