I'm glad you were able to solve your problem. DMC3 is infamous for being a terrible port and even though this mod fixes most of the issues with the game, some people still have a hard time getting it to work. Anyhow, another way to get around controller issues is creating a controller profile for the game using Big Picture mode.

Your version of the game is not compatible with SS, that or you don't have the Visual C++ packages installed. The former can be solved with the japanese patch for DMC3, copy the following on your browser, delete all the *

This is how I made my retail copy work with SS. Extract and replace inside your DMC3 directory and you should be good to go.
