Are you supposed to start without any equipment and not enough money on hand to purchase anything? I've got a cavalry officer that served in the spanish american war and he can afford one thing. So I can give him like a horse but no weapons, binoculars or anything. Doesn't seem right?

Something is wrong with your play through. I have about 5-8k on my starts depending on the options I choose for the character during startup.

no its normal, if you chose more active duty soldier answers instead of politician/civilian answers you'll have more stat stars but less money/influence

The 'Lucrative' answer for whether you fought in mexico gives you a huge amount of money.

Yeah I went with the career soldier answers and started with only $100, which I spent on a horse, which got shot out from under me in the first engagement
