Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)

How to get a Corps command?
I am playing as Confederate and it is Oct 1862. I am a Major General commanding a Division. It says that I cant get a promotion now because I need to have a higher command (Corps or Army) but I cant take over any of the existing Corps or Armies only transfer to them. I have over 9k prestige also. Why cant I take over a Corps?

Just wondering how someone can be a major general, be a division commander and have 9K prestige at late 1862... Are you modding game files sir?

Nope, not at all. When you get your own Division that you can move around yourself the prestige can skyrocket after a couple of major victories if you choose your battles carefully.

The newest beta patch says that the ai would grant you command but easiest way is to spend some prestige to apply for corps command.

What I did was look out for newly formed Corps, so the cost to prestige is lower than applying for a full sized existing corps.

Lt. Gen. rank is only unlocked with the Lt. Gen. policy, which requires Military Act III, which you can find under the policy tab

The problem is that the button for taking over any Corps is not there (If it was just prestige I lacked the button would be there but greyed out), all I get is the transfer button on any Corps or Army size unit.

Time out, how are you using a Division as a maneuver unit? Is that possible in standard campaigns, or only the East 1861 rescaled scenario?

I am playing the East 1861 Whiskey & Lemons rescaled scenario yes.

In the campaign I'm playing I'm also a MG in command of the Department of Pennsylvania with 60,000 troops, but the army has never adopted the Corps organization. It has Departments and Armies, but no Corps, just divisions. Army reform has been achieved, but no Corps were organized. Unlike. the Campaign game in W+L you can't just upgrade to the Corps structure by clicking an up arrow. You'd think that with 15K prestige you'd be able to influence that, but no. Meanwhile, though I have occupied and held Richmond, Petersburg, Norfolk, and recaptured Ft. Monroe, held all that ground for over a year, over half of VA; we're still losing the damned war. How do I get to be in Command of the whole Union army, so I can re-organize it?
P.S. Artillery is the key to victory.

WTF, are you also playing on the rescaled 1861 scenario? I haven't tried that one. Sounds like the 'switch' that happens normally isn't working for that campaign, probably a bug introduced by the very different unit structures.

But I can confirm both sides create Corps by 1862 if you play the normally-scaled campaign, and Corps command is achievable either for a Prestige cost or if a newly-created Corps needs a commander and you're a BG commanding a Division.

When you take over an army or a department and control more than one division your effectively a corps, they just don't call it that and there's no army command that controls more than one corps, at least not as far as I have played in W&L. So there is no coherent overall strategy.

I believe you're mistaken. I've played W&L as both sides and, once the relevant Policies are completed, Army commands with subordinate Corps will be organized. This is true for newly-created Armies as well as existing forces being reorganized, and Corps of the same Army will concentrate on objectives / areas and reinforce into tactical battles. My PC has lead Army-level groups for both sides.

Try doing W&L starts from ANY CAMPAIGN BESIDES EASTERN THEATER 1861 (REGIMENT SCALE). It very much sounds like OOBs in that campaign are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.

Please let me know following details:
-which campaign are you playing?
-in management screen (OOB), is your commander's rank written [inside brackets] or not?
-what resolution are you using?

There should be nothing preventing you from doing this in the situation you describe. So, trying to figure out what it could be.

It would help, if you could send the information I request here, along with the save of this campaign & situation to info@grandtactician.com so I could debug it in the engine, thanks.
