Whiskey and Lemons Question
So came back to the game after a long break and bought the W/L DLC. It's pretty cool starting as a lowly regimental commander...at least the idea is. What I'm having difficulty with is what to do in battle. My brigade commander and other regiments usually just wander around and don't form up to do anything, which puts me in the position of acting alone or just sitting in the rear or running about aimlessly. Am I doing something wrong or is it the DLC AI acting poorly? I guess what I'm saying is unit cohesion is about non-existent under my AI brigade commander. Zero attack or defense coordination. Fingers crossed that patch being worked on addresses this as the game is quite unplayable in this state.

You need to use influence points to take control of other units and get more influence pts to take over a larger command. Forget your commander....take control.

Ok, I restarted as a 5th brigade commander Army of Potomac and won the first Manassas. My question is do you guys wait for orders from P.G.T. or do you spend prestige to order the entire army to move? I understand that I can do so, but if I try to be more RP and wait for orders for the entire army to move, is AI so poor that the army won't move in a logical direction? Thanks.

If you have enough prestige to take command, and the situation isn't hopeless, then do it. If not, the Commanders orders are pretty much worthless, as they do not give orders or they give too many orders, changing them as quickly as you acknowledge them. I just go on my own initiative, If I get an order and it's reasonable and achievable I'll follow it. Otherwise, I follow my own counsel.

PS. there's no benefit, other than prestige points to following orders. The Commander doesn't react, in fact, he's more likely to be pissed if you take over his command. Also, don't take over unless you have a good chance of prevailing, you lose the retreat option, and have to fight it out until victory or defeat.

Thanks. I get it, especially in tactical combat. But is it a good idea to use prestige post battle to move the entire army to its next destination?

Played for almost 400 hours now in W&L and havnt found AI doing really bad in battles, except cavalry often rushing into battle and get wiped out before inf&arty got to action. As I see the superior commander order you to move to a location where he will send most of his troops and after most of his troops at/near this place he giving you an order to engage at will, meaning its up to you where you want to help.
As for taking command over other units... Its up to your game style. If you playing W&L you probably want a roleplay and MUST accept situations where there are not everyone genious as you and your superior may be as bad as donkey. But if you want to be in control at each point, then just play original game where you dont need to ask permission to do something or command someone.
Moving post battle... LOL, how can someone answer if its good or bad? Its depend on situation. First of all if you win or lose. If lose and there are nearby other enemies than those who just beat you up, then it would be wise to move farther away. If you a victor and enemy retreating, then it MUST to follow him as long as you can to inflict more casualties. Even if you win sometimes its better to stay and prepare defencives than to move somewhere else. Even if you lose its again sometimes better to stay in place than run for the hills. Its all depends on situation.
Also if you want to roleplay, remember one thing: Many US generals were against direct attack on Marye Heights at Fredericksburg, but they followed that command because its army and not a circus.

I often find that the orders arent stupid themselves just executed poorly like cavalry and artillery leading charges and getting whipped instead of being deployed a rectangle behind or on the flanks. Or as stated previously just not getting orders at all or getting bombarded with 4 orders all at once and then having them be useless to me and the AI. Its one thing to follow a poorly conceived order or plan its another to have you and Kearny duke it out to the death whilst Slocum stays shadowboxing the ghost of Christmas past.
