As for taking command over other units... Its up to your game style. If you playing W&L you probably want a roleplay and MUST accept situations where there are not everyone genious as you and your superior may be as bad as donkey. But if you want to be in control at each point, then just play original game where you dont need to ask permission to do something or command someone.
Moving post battle... LOL, how can someone answer if its good or bad? Its depend on situation. First of all if you win or lose. If lose and there are nearby other enemies than those who just beat you up, then it would be wise to move farther away. If you a victor and enemy retreating, then it MUST to follow him as long as you can to inflict more casualties. Even if you win sometimes its better to stay and prepare defencives than to move somewhere else. Even if you lose its again sometimes better to stay in place than run for the hills. Its all depends on situation.
Also if you want to roleplay, remember one thing: Many US generals were against direct attack on Marye Heights at Fredericksburg, but they followed that command because its army and not a circus.
