As far as getting promoted, mod all your generals stats at the beginning of the campaign. All the stats and the experience. Once you get military organization ( the one where you can create corps/armies ) you have a high chance of being promoted as commander of an army and then general in chief.
I'm playing that campaign right now. Now I'm off to give all of the Army of the Shenandoah Gatling guns
I finally got it to work, but used the coffee gun. I love modding this game
I wonder what it would be like to give an infantry BDE of 3000 men, 30 pound parrots.....at close range the enemy would just turn to dust.
Then go to regiments, it will open up in notepad. I give my units nicknames so they are easier to search for prior to this. Search for the nickname you gave your unit and change their weapon code.
I change my cannons to 15 inch naval guns
Changed mixed muskets to gatling guns.
This is better than adjusting weapon stats because it prevents the enemy from gaining the upper hand.
In my experience with the gatling guns its almost too easy unless the enemy out numbers you 10 to 1.
I'm not very good at this modding business, how do you tell which number to change and is there any documentation on what each of the numbers mean in the regiment.dat file? Also is there a list that shows the weapons and the corresponding numbers? Thank you.
Ok the number is based on the modding spread sheet. Each weapon has a code in the spread sheet under the weapons tab.
The first thing you do is name the unit, this way its easy to find when you search for it.
Search your hard drive, I simply tpye in SAVE.
It will eventually bring up the most recent save files, if Grand Tactician was the last game you played it will be the most recent save file.
Open the file, make sure you do this when you are NOT in battle and the game is not actively running.
When you open the save file you will see REGIMENTS
Open that document
Press CTRL and F at the same time, and then type in the specific name you named your unit.
The eleventh number down will be the weapons number. for example mixed muskets should be 42, mixed cav weapons is 43. Gatling guns are 37.......just figure out which weapon you want to equip your soldiers with.
Then save the file.
Once you open your game, load the absolute most recent save which should be an auto save file.
At this point you should see your specific unit with your custom weapons.
The down side I found is that if you leave the unit to command another unit the computer will default back to a weapon the unit can carry. My previous brigade went from gatling guns to Mississippi rifles because gatling guns are not coded for infantry.
You can also do this with arty units, I gave mine 15 inch naval cannons!!!!!
Ok thank you for that info. I suppose, based on what you said about taking another command that the weapons will automatically default back to their historical weapons, that that would preclude giving the same type of weapons to another regiment that you are not commanding correct?
My character was promoted to Brigade Commander and my original regiment is in the brigade I was commanding, but it kept the weapons I modded it for. So I guess, because I'm still in the chain of command, they didn't have to give up their weapons.
Is there any way to get a non commanded unit to use weapons (such as) gatling guns instead of muskets?
Thanks for your help bud.
Not that I have found. I took command of the division that contained my original brigade so they kept the weapons, but I had to leave the main unit altogether when I took command of a corps. When I checked back on the unit I noticed they were carrying Mississippi rifles, their original weapons were spring field muskets until I change them to Gatling guns.
As an experiment, I played the orginal game and gave each main army one unit with gatling guns. In this case, 1 year later all of the original units still have Gatling guns.
I have played this entire game defensively while I try to figure out the economy and navy portions of the game. I never go on the attack. This has helped me develop both a decent economy and naval combat strategy. Since I am not spending vasts amount of money carrying a standing force of over 300K.
I do not think it is possible to play the game outside the easiest difficulty and maintain a functional army, navy and economy all at the same time with standard weapons. The north's naval, industrial and population advantage is just to vast.
