Trenches feel like death traps - for the defender.

I have problems with my troops staying in the trenches. If the enemy unit gets too close my stupid brigades will randomly leave the protection of the trenches and bayonet charge. Utterly stupid and leaves the line vulnerable especially if it charges a numerically superior foe.

I notice that to. Since last patch units have habit to bayonet charge even if they sit is stronger position behing fortifications

Yes this happens, but keep a close watch, and manually try to redeploy if it starts, don't let them get flanked. Putting Artillery in the fortification initially helps but seems they are a big target and can be routed but remember the guns are most generally still there and can be re maned if your brigades don't have skirmishers deployed. I like 12 lb Nepolions for this mission, they have great range to put attacking brigades under fire early, have great canister fire power at close range, and a good rate of fire.

A lot of folks don't like Artillery Batteries in the Infantry lines, but I have found them grant big Shotguns have a way of causing a couple of large enemy brigades to show their backs quickly. Sometimes this is where you need to make sure your brigades don't leave the trenches. May be a good idea to bring up your reserves especially if your defending a victory point location.
