RIVER COMBAT
I have over one thousand hours on the game yet never seen any riverboat combat. In fact I can't recall even seeing a Union AI fleet on the rivers- Ohio, Cumberland or Mississippi. Also are there special requirements for a river fleet to attack a river transported army or attack forts or land based armies (bombardment). I have seen transported armies sail right past a blockading fleet on the river.

I'm over 600 hours, and I have had and continue to have numerous river combat encounters.

Plus, I've noticed--when playing as the Union--that the CSA puts more assets into its river navy in response to what I do. As the Union, I don't win all the river battles (nor all the Eastern seaboard ones either).

I build multiple small squadrons and situate them down the MS river to block all ports to New Orleans. I typically have battles at New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Vicksburg, and sometimes Memphis. The AI normally counters my riverine fleets by attacking Cairo and St. Louis, even sometimes heading to Evansville and Cincinnati.

I also have had numerous river battles near Nashville.

Best of luck to you...

LCcmdr, I find this a bit hard to believe. First the cost and the time to build and maintain good Coastal and Riverine Fleets while building the required land component would break my bank playing as the Confederacy. It could be that I am not playing the economy correctly or the tech tree right, I have over 1300 on the game. I have had Navel Battles trying to break parts of the Block-aid, but because Auto-solve is the only way to resolve Both Forts and Navel conflict it is not as immersive as land combat thus like any game that relies on auto-solve it's bland.

I've definitely had a lot of river combat. Not more than coastal combat, but a lot.

It's interesting to hear that some people have seen a lot of river combat... because it is extremely rare for me to see any during a 61 campaign

What setting do you play on? Have you sent your fleets deep enough into enemy territory?
LCcmdr Jul 21, 2022 @ 8:24am
I'm playing on medium or lower, with aggression set to very easy. That's why I marvel that I having these experiences. (And, I'm playing lower levels to try to learn the economy path.)

I find you have to go where the enemy is in order to get a fight. As CSA go to Cairo as USA go to Vicksburg you will find a fight.

Mogami_99 is correct; but, I've had river combat initiated by the CSA on multiple occasions. In fact, that's why I started building river squadrons: to defend and deter river invasions.

I do play slowly, especially now that I'm trying to learn how to utilize the new economy components.

As the CSA, the Union typically assaults New Orleans via the Gulf. I can't figure how the AI gets all the supplies to make this happen all along my coastal zones. When I play as the Union, it takes me a long time to start subduing just the Eastern coastal areas, much less reach the Gulf of Mexico.

OTOH, when I play as the Confederates, I simply cannot sustain both a huge fleet expense and raise the necessary armies for the ground pounding.

I have drug the NOLA Fleet up to the Tennessee and associated rivers. Any transport sailing those rivers will be blasted by the NOLA fleet should they encounter.

Well you know something I don't know because I've never had a fleet be able to stop transports... they just sail right on by

That's because the AI doesn't even build river fleets in the 61 campaign (at least that's been my experience)

My experience is just the opposite, though I can't recall if that's the case every campaign I've started. BTW, I've always restarted campaign with each released update. I did not realize that the campaigns would continue on with new changes. What a loss of effort for me. OTOH, I learned a great deal from so many "FRESH" starts.

That also happened to me in all my games until recently. In my latest game I was able to thwart several enemy troop transports with my fleets. The developers must have made this possible in a recent update.

Maybe so. I haven't had the opportunity since the latest updates
