This Game is Better than Total War.
Just sayin'. It has sooooo many systems total war doesnt have. Battles and campaigns have more units with more variety with more mechanics, that require more strategy and tactics (which are actually two different things, and both are done well here), buildings and railroads and forts but nothing that makes you feel like you're just controlling all of your citizens, HISTORICAL ACCURACY, and so much more that it's insane.

When I played Empire, Napoleon, or Shogun 2 FotS back in the day and thought about what it could be this game is legit better than what I used to think about. They even took a time period as controversial as the civil war and not only were they true to the history, they did so without putting any modern political spin on it. I can play as the union and not see "yea but the south shall rise ageen" and I can play as the south and not see "grr you have slaves! you bad!".

The ONLY (and I do mean the only) thing Total War does better than this game is graphics, and even then total war graphics can suck it if it means I can have hundreds of thousands of men on the field in as many corps, units, and divisions as I please.

Goo job devs... good friggin job!

I'v been playing TW game's since the very 1st TW game. I have them all some high 100's in hour's some high 1000's in hour's 1 of them Rome 2 i have 2600 something. I still own the hard copy of Rome 1 lol. I have not bought a TW game since Rome 2. So i guess i don't own all of them. But you are correct GTCW has so much more to offer then TW game's and if you have a computer that's men't for sold gaming like myself i can just about turn every spec. and graphics all the way up in every game i play and have. Startrek online , naval action, war thunder , all the TW game's i have i'm sure you get the point. The strategic and feel and everything you control and do far out way the graphics in this game but to be honest and going back to my statement about a good computer that i made if you have a sold gaming computer and screen the graphics in this game are not that bad. In short this will turn out to be one of those game's that i will end up having 1000's upon 1000's of hour's invested in and to comment on the modern political spin being left out that is one of the main thing's i love about the game political PC crap should be left out of all game's for god sake it's a GAME and that's all it is a GAME.

I'm one of the guys that worked on the Civil War mod for Empire:TW and I agree this game is way better suited to simulate the whole range of issues to tackle when recreating that period. The TW engine was just too limited in what it could do. Even our CW mod, in spite of a number of gameplay changes made to better reflect the combat of the era, was essentially just a graphic overhaul.

Agree, however TW N3 Mod does bring more units/better realism. Graphics are better, however very poor AI, where as CW is much better. Would like to keep claimed art. though.

Same. Been playing TW since the very first in the series: Shogun. I went one further than you, however, and it even became my favourite: Attila TW. 1600 h played. After that TW went downhill for me. This game is a good replacement. Actually much better in many respects.
(PS: I agree with you on the politics that should be left out of gaming. I'm optimistic that we've seen the worst of that, though.)

I just bought the game late yesterday afternoon and have only played through the Battle of Winchester tutorial. I ended up going to bed very late. I completely lost track of time.

I'm retired military, hence my interest in historical-style military and naval games (though it's hard to find many that are truly historical), and I've played most of the Total War series (except the ones with dragons and such), and strategy games from Gary Grigsby's War in the West to WarPlan Pacific to War on the Sea to Victory at Sea Pacific to Wargame European Escalation and Ultimate General Civil War, all of which have their virtues.

I'm very impressed by what I've experienced so far in playing, "Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)". This is shaping up to be the king of Civil War strategy games. I look forward to playing this one for a long time.

Well done, development team! I'm very happy that I stumbled onto this title and decided to take a chance and buy it! You've got a winner here.

Yeh, it's more realistic than TW.

Hey, Glad to have a genuine civil war vet in the game :D
Tell me, was Lincoln actually that tall? :))

I agree. The best part is, as the 1.06 update demonstrates, the devs aren't done tweaking and perfecting this game yet. The more GT CW is developed, the more distance this franchise will assuredly put between itself and the TW series IMO.

He was a long drink of water, LOL!

No, I didn't join until long after that. The most historical that I get is that I did serve with guys who were in WW2 back when I was young.

But they were getting ready for mandatory, longevity-induced retirement when I knew them. And there weren't many left by then.

Grand Tactician is the best wargame/strategy game that I have played.

Total War gives you the 3D battles but really needs an overhaul now.
ajarnlance Jun 5, 2022 @ 9:59am
I AGREE!! I love the total war games BUT this game beats them all. Great job devs!!
Tal-Knight2 Jun 5, 2022 @ 11:06am
The TW games' design focus has turned more and more from tactics to RTS-like competitive multiplayer, i.e. button mashing and quick reflexes. The battles in this game hearken back to games like Medieval 2 and Rome 1, where units were slow, battle lines held steady for a long time, and your initial maneuvering could win or lose the battle. And furthermore, GTCW adds on a vastly superior campaign layer with much deeper strategic elements, not to mention an actual logistics system that has a real effect on maneuvers and battles.

I've never played Total War, but I'll wager that this is the absolute top Civil War Game ever produced.
