Auto- battles
Being unable to fight battles is a really, really, really BIG problem

So you’re unable to fight auto battles? Or is the issue that you can only fight auto battles?

Are you on an offensive posture for that army? If both the CSA and Union armies are on defensive posture, there will be a siege.
Do both armies have ample readiness? (Btw, readiness can be turned off in the options, though I like using it because it is more realistic imho.)

This is most likely due to an orange or red readiness for your army. That, or they are starving and have low morale. Large attacking armies often have that impact on smaller, under supplied armies with lower readiness.

auto battles are broken in this game. Don't ever use them.

It's not readiness and it's not stance and I didn't chose auto-resolve. I had just started a 62 campaign playing as Rebs. I knew the AI was gonna head for Richmond so I stared sending all ANV corps that way Magruder got their first, then Longstreet. The Union 3rd corps attacked Longstreet. The crossed swords were up, I clicked assault and fought and won the battle After that they attacked the fort. I knew I was way outnumbered so I waited for reinforcements when they got there I tried to attack but the only option it would give was retreat. Assault was grayed out. It happens every time there's a fort is involved in a battle

So, the reason for this is the presence of a fort makes it still a fort battle which cant be controlled. best you can do is auto it. technically the army is still set up besieging the fort and the reinforcements havent yet broken the siege. attacking them would be attacking fortified defensive positions hence why its still counted like a siege, my main issue is that the army attacking the fort cant turn to fight off the reinforcements and either has to retreat or just stand there hoping they win the auto rolls, very wonky

Perhaps it's a reflection of the AI setting, in which those playing at harder settings rarely ever win on auto while those at VE-Easy do win. I've experienced both a series of losses and a series of victories using the auto function, as well as the third option, thereby allowing me to rush more troops to that battlefield.

They aren't fully broken, but they suffer from quirks and need improvement. I almost exclusively used auto-resolve in tht last campaign. Sometimes you get weird results in casualties or really long sieges, but overall it does function.

Ah yes very constructive and helpful feedback as always. What would we do without your brilliant insights.

The thing is SOMETIMES that works in a fort battle. I can move troops there and when the crossed swords appear , I click it and am allowed to assault. Either way, it needs to be fixed. I bought the game to fight RT battles not to have a battle of over 100,000 troops and have to go content myself with something else while it plays out... sometimes for months
