Naval Bombardment Mechanics
Has anyone figured out any details on how naval bombardments work? Suggestions on the types and number of ships to use for these? Assuming bigger ships are better but not sure since there’s no explanation of what the different naval guns actually do (mortars vs. howitzer vs. cannon vs. rifle…pounder vs. inch).

I can give you only a partial answer. If you want to know what naval guns do, open the Modding Tool Excel file and go to weapons. It gives you a very detailed list of specifications for each type of naval gun. What I cannot find is anything that tells you "if you create x ship, it will get x gun and y gun." When fleets are created you can hover over their number of guns and it will tell you what that fleet has. The same is true of forts you might engage.

Sorry. The "Ship Types" tab tells you what guns come with each ship. Idk how I missed that.

Anyways, you'll probably want some guns that do a lot of penetration, so check those stats out in the Weapons tab. Trajectory is in there, too. Accuracy and range might be important.

You may also want to browse the fleets section of the campaignprefs file. There's some stuff in there that relates to range or RoF modifiers for naval combat.

Thanks GreatScots. I don't really dabble in the mod tool file much so forget it's there.
Yeah not knowing how those certain numbers for Penetration, Trajectory, Ammo weight, Etc actually get calculated in the behind the scenes "Naval Bombardment" action it's really just a guessing game.

Maybe when I have some time I can make some save games and try out various scenarios with different ship types vs. forts.
