Charging
Once in a while I can get an infantry brigade to charge, once in a great while I can get cavalry to draw their steel, but the planets have to be aligned properly. Even with the corps commander in bugle range, I just can't find the right sequence of clicks or the proper sacrifice to appease the gods of close combat. Sometimes I'll get the crossed sabers, right click on the target and nothing happens and its back to crosshairs.

You're holding the ALT key, right?
Nugcrusher Jan 12, 2022 @ 9:25pm
Yea, the ALT key (crossed sabers every time) and the distance to the target should be reasonably short...the infantry is running after all (cavalry can be a further away...but not much). Otherwise, my units charge...no problem.

No, I selected the charge posture. I thought alt was just to move officers without moving the whole unit. Thanks!

It does that for the HQ, but that's because the HQ isn't considered an unit, for the fighting aspect of the game. O.O, for the other ones, it charges.
Never tried in with artillery though... O.O

That's a hard one to research because all of the search results are about charging against artillery not t'other way round.

Prepare to have to give that order almost on repeat. What I mean is, for some reason, Cav units when ordered to charge, do charge, but almost immediately seem to disengage. Atleast that is how it works when the target unit is routed. Once in a blue moon you can tell a Cav unit to chrage (I say pursue) a routed unit, and it will continue to engage them until you tell it to stop or the unit dies.

If you want to use "charge", "cold steel", or even "close range", try turning off AI initiative (top-left in command menu). This prevents the AI from taking the easier/more obvious option and opening fire at range.

The Alt-charge is fine, but the "charge" order (at least in theory) causes them to unleash a close-range volley before charging. They'll also sometimes get intimidated and enter a firefight instead, though from my understanding this is mitigated by more experienced troops.

Thanks for this suggestion, I couldn't figure out why recently been fighting with a lot of my units back and forth, been doing a lot more medium and close range stuff then I have in the past.

Are there any quick keys for fallback and advance?

Awesome, thanks!

Yeah I find that pursuit is really the only way to rack up serious casualties and it has to be done on a retail basis. Maybe turning off the AI Initiative like Marsouin said would allow for a complete pursuit.

Thank you, I'll definitely go through the units and tell my officers to stop thinking for themselves - that only leads to trouble... ;-) Heck you'd think the one time initiative would be most appropriate is when you are pursuing a fleeing enemy.

If you tell the unit to charge it should countermand any AI control of that unit. I have to agree that charging is a nightmare. These things really need fixing once and for all, they are dragging on too long. I mean charging issues have plagued the game forever. The devs need to get these things on top of their list.

You know every time I think of playing this game again I see posts like this on the forum raising issues that I had when I last played the game a year ago. Getting frustrating !!!
