Detach does not detach
Nor does the junior commander act independently. Detached commanders were given an objective or a mission. Then they were left on their own to carry it out. However, this game does not provide for that. It's not very helpful to have the commander of say a cav regt that has to wait at every single objective to get new orders.

How about implementing an "act independent mode" that actually treats that outfit as a separate entity from all other commands on the field.

agree completely. what's the point of detaching a cavalry unit and sending it to the other side of the battlefield to scout if they still have to wait for like an hour for the courier from HQ?

As a work-around, you can give your cavalry a division commander. Give orders to the brigade directly, and the game treats the order as coming from the next senior commander. If you have a Div HQ, the order will come from that, and the HQ will follow the brigade, so when you give the brigade new orders it will be close by.

But your are right, the 'detach' command doesn't seem to work in-game (I think it works at battle start IIR, I could be wrong about that).

Also, "Detach" needs to be a thing with Corps on the strategic map.

I usually give brigade level commands to deattached units, be it cav or infantry and it tends to work better but as everyone else here has said so far, i agree that deattach as it currently is presented in game is misleading. Because you'll be waiting for the deattached commander as stated to get orders from the army commander if you try to give the division as a whole a command.

what detach actually does is it allows you to give orders to a higher command without effecting that unit. For example if you detach an artillery unit and place in in a very specific spot then tell its entire division to move it will stay were it is. If you tell the detached unit to move it still needs orders from its division commander.

I only find it useful for artillery in a division.

Someone already mentioned it but a good work around is a small calvary division. I have Stuart with 2 brigades of calvary and one of artillery. I use the whole division to scout and Stuart is always close with orders or a place to fall back to.
