Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)

Advice required - Trains !
I have 0 / 50 trains used, and time and time again, i tell the corps to use a train for transport and time and time again they walk past a city with a rail station and walk up the road...

Are there some smart tips to get the trains to be actually used, this is very frustrating...
I have units wandering weeks next to lines rather than catching trains...

I mean they occasionally climb on-board, but I have no idea, why most of the time they walk parallel to the tracks... and don't hop on board...

Help !

+1 also been scratching my head with trains
Further to my post here are some questions...
1) Can you get on a train between cities at any point on the track or just cities?
2) If only cities is the answer above... Some tracks pass directly through or to cities, other tracks pass very close by (The track aims at the city and them skims past it) does this make a difference...
3) When telling a unit to use a train, does the unit already have to be standing on the track?
4) can you embark a train in an enemy territory in a town you have taken lets say?

Some advice / answers please, this is really affecting things... Having armies march weeks because then don't embark trains, due to some UI issue or game logic, is ruining the immersion --- i cant get armies up north.... Where they are needed right now, its all seems arbitrary as to whether they will get on a train or not and 80% of the time they don't...

I haven't seen a train used in some time. Back a few updates probably. Something seems off, but haven't investigated.
I haven't had problems with using trains. Are both ends and the track between under your control? Trains don't run between nations.

Yes I control the full length it goes through several states..., the track gets used by me on the rare occasion it works... I cant fathom why it works sometimes and not others...
Its the one that goes from the Carolina's through to Virginia there are no enemy troops in any of these states and i'm playing the south. They all have my boarder color..

+1 can't figure it out
I think AI, then economy, then infrastructure needs serious reworking, in that order. Perhaps the AI is choosing to march rather than ride in trains in this case?
You can get on a train between cities. Sometimes units will use the railroad as desired, but sometimes pathfinding ignores railroads in favour of roads. With the latter, I find it helps to order the army to march onto the track, then reorder the desired movement, again with rail option selected in the movement order.

I also find it helpful to order movement in stages - so take the railroad from A to B, then order from B to C and so on. In my experience, ordering a single movement often results in units ignoring railroads, especially where different railroads intersect.

And yes, it can be a little frustrating, but it is doable.
I was under the impression that they had altered the use of trains
How many man are in the Corps? I've found that a 20k man corps typically uses about 70-80 train capacity so being only at 50 it could be they aren't using trains because you don't have the capacity to transport the entire force. Do you notice the same issue with smaller forces?

They only said that trains would no longer be allowed to be used inside of enemy territory.

Think insufficient capacity should just result in slower transit. At least that's what it says in the 'old' manual.

And,yes, rail is no longer available in enemy territory.

Thank you i will try the move to stand on track, but if you are a slight bit forward of the city they never take train....dont want to walk backward 3 feet to catch train, abd if it starts in a city ugh...

Im moving many smaller armies north to merge with my army of potomic and a the army of the shenindoah(sp?). none are more than 7000, my trains are sitting 0/50
3 months game time in and at last trains have been used - a small union army got a train from Philadelphia to Baltimore! Perhaps trains can only be used for moves deep within your own territory? Also when ordering a move make sure the train mode button is pressed as its really hard to tell the difference between grey and slightly goldy gray!
