As I understand this game mechanic, you must strive to engage the enemy unless the defend symbol is given. Now, the other dynamic is the capture points that can influence battles until the fighting, maneuvering, and dying begins. No amount of capture points can overturn a clear win--whether minor or major victory.
All that being said I have not really provoked any battles yet so I usually have the objectives and just set up on good ground and wait for the AI to come to me and then spring my flankers on it. (love cav for this job each corps has its own arty division and nothing spreads confusion more then enemy artillery suddenly opening fire in your rear
In theory "attacking"/"defending" is only going to have marginal influence. Still have to go meet the enemy one way or the other.
If they are "defending" they are giving you a lot of initiative. If their numbers are that great I would just try and kill as many as can and then live to fight another day.
on the strategy map I tend to always be in "attack", I couldn't honestly say in tactical battles if I was the designated "attacker" or "defender" I kind of let the terrain and my initial position dictate my aggressiveness. I'd have to go back to the early days to remember a situation was the "defender".
