Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)

Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865)

Question before I buy
I am a big fan of RTS games. I play Ultimate General Civil War. Love it. How is this in comparison ? Better ..worse ? It looks (youtube) really fun in terms of grand strat and being able to zoom in to the battle. However , looks extremely choppy .

UGCW and this aren't really comporable. Whereas UGCW is incredibly unrealistic/arcadey, and only features the tactical side, GTCW is very realistic and also features the strategical side. That being said just as a game GTCW is also a lot better designed.

I would say that it is more comparable to the total war series in that you have grand strategy and tactical battles meshed together, with more emphasis on the grand strategy side. I would say the opposite of the previous poster and say that right now the design is worse off than UGCW due to the immense scale of what the game is trying to accomplish and the limited means of which to produce it. I bought it to support the development as it could one day be an incredible title, but right now, it is super choppy. I would check back in 6 months and see what it looks like before buying, especially as it is $40.

This is a similarly bad comparison as total war is also incredibly unrealistic. GTCW is incredibly different from either of the two as it actually tries to be realistic, and accomplishes this.

the design is worse off than UGCW
UGCW's battles, which is the only thing the game really has, are incredibly flawed and poorly designed from a gameplay - not to mention realism - point of view. While GTCW has some flaws for its battle system, mainly regarding the victory/loss bar, objectives, and of course the occasional AI issue, it generally works pretty well.

So I'm playing it now . Figured got 2 hour window to return it lol. Diving into their field manual . Is there a easier way to cancel an order already sent out or have to wait for runner ? Secondly is there somewhere to quick select units instead of zooming in and out to find them ? Thanks

Give each unit a facing order, that will cancel all move orders immediately. Then give a new move order.

Okay thanks. When you try to retreat. Units stuck in melee won't disengage right away? Realistically. Correct ?

Good luck getting them to disengage from melee even after the next day of battle. I hope they fix this bug soon.

LOL for real ? Okay because I was wondering why they wouldnt disengage. Is there a way to just end the battle. Or do you have to sit there and wait with 10x speed on ? Good lord I hope not .

Well said.....UGCW is a much simpler wargame than this one....plus I think this game is alot more fun also....the enjoyment factor is of primary importance I would think.....but you have to be willing to put in alot more effort with this game than UGCW....its worth it if youre willing.

Getting things to work in this is half the battle. Besides the attention to detail in the historical accuracy, this game is not able to deliver, yet. Besides that melee bug theres all sorts of things that plague the game, which is why I let you know it was choppy. The campaign AI is atrocious and you can pick armies off one by one, the tactical ai is also not great and on quite a few maps you can just remember most of their standard deployments and setup accordingly to defeat the enemy(the ai has a hard on for capturing not holding victory points). Trying to leave fighting to your generals is a sure fire why to lose thousands of troops. You can have as many brigade level commanders accurately depicted as you want, the game is just not worth recommending someone spend $40 at this point.

Also, just to add a response to people who think this isn't arcadey, the only reason for not destroying most armies you face in this game is that the game ends randomly when you have surrounded their whole army, because tactical ai so bad it isn't hard. However many times I got Lee's moby ♥♥♥♥ of an engagement, and they somehow get away. This also seems arcadey to me.

I'd agree with this, though not with the last line. As much as I love this game for what it's becoming it isn't ready for a serious playthrough and calling it "realistic" with the number of bugs and design issues is just wrong. The goal is realism and scope but it isn't there yet.

What you can do now is play reasonably good historical battles, muck about the campaign to report the many bugs and issues you'll encounter, and screw around with the remarkably modular unit and battle files to tweak your experience.

The developers are incredibly busy and helpful, any issue you bring to them will be resolved and the game is noticeably better now than it was on release, but it's still probably a month away from being an immersive civil war campaign.

I do see that OP bought it so hopefully you're enjoying it

I refunded it lol. I played just under 2 hours. The campaign was a buggy mess. Battles zoomed in were choppy. I have a really good pc so its not my rig. I back up many EA titles. This however, needs A LOT of work. Immense potential . But needs time. Maybe I'll buy it down the road in like a year once they fix it up and optimize it.
