You do know that highschoolers do date one another, right? They've been doing it for quite a while.

Most of them are from Japan. And the vast majority of Japanese manga, anime, and video games are centered around late teens / young adults. Doesn't matter if they have anything to do with dating or romance at all. It's just a cultural thing.

Also, are you saying that everyone who plays a game has to be the same age as the protagonist? Same sexual orientation and gender, too?

It's not just women. Most yaoi dating sims focus on highschool as well. As do tons of other media that have nothing to do with sex or dating at all. It's just a very popular setting over there.

Also, if you discount the dating games and look at the games that focus purely on sex, there's a much, much wider range of locations, settings, and age groups represented.
