We really need more things to do or to explore - Thanks
How to not starve at first:
Plan A = eat fish.
1. Find a school of edible fish and place buoy to mark it. There are at least two schools in the starting area. (thanks for the idea frillen)
2. Every time you are sailing or swimming nearby the fish school, check for sharks. If no sharks, spear 2 fish. If still no sharks try for fish #3. Once sharks arrive they will steal all your fish and injure you as well.
Plan B = eat emergency rations.
1. Find a bunch of crates on the sea floor and mark the locations with a buoy. There are maybe 10 locations or so..
2. Once a day go around to all the locations and harvest the crates. Some crates have bandages or food inside. It's not too much, but it should be enough to keep you from starving. (thanks to ChrisChros for this idea)
You can use those for crafting bandages and first aid kits at the processing station.

There is no menu option to save. You need to use the bedroll in the starter raft or a bed once you can build them. Bedrolls/beds let you advance time to rest and save the game.
