[SPOILERS] Any other games like Obra Dinn?
Just finished Obra Dinn and had a great time. I found it a bit strange that there weren’t any secrets or easter eggs besides the different ways to identify the harder crewmembers, and the ending was a bit anticlimactic (i really thought the shells and by extension the sirens were mind-controlling anyone who saw them/fell under their influence). Still, Martin’s last words along with the final cutscene with the shelf were quite cathartic, and I’m going through the whole post-completion melancholy that happens after finishing absolute banger games such as Obra Dinn.

Are there any other games out there that capture the same level of intrigue and, for lack of a better word “magic” as this game? Lucas Pope hasn’t really put out anything else in a while (not really interested in Mars to Midnight since it’s essentially $206 for 2 hours of gameplay). I’ve played Outer Wilds and Case of the Golden Idol and plan on playing Phantom Trick: Ghost Detective, which are in my opinion on the same track of intrigue and a similar level as Obra Dinn in their own respective ways.

Any other game recommendations? Doesn’t have to just be mystery/detective games, but for some reason those are the games that I’ve really enjoyed the most as of late.

The Painscreek Killings, the best detective game I've ever played.

Don't look anything up and don't watch anything about it. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome.

Not many sadly, but there are some other great titles!

I've heard Painscreek Killings mentioned a lot, picked it up recently but haven't given it a go just yet so can't comment, but looking foreward to it based on what I've read.

Been sinking my teeth into the The Case of the Golden Idol which I also grabbed the other day, and it's been great so far. I saw this a long while back and honestly the art style turned me away, but the game is really good. Similar to Obra Dinn except there's more of a story, which has you "travel" about, so things feel a bit more fresh after some hours.

I'd also highly recommend Outer Wilds and Chants of Sennaar too. These are more "adventure"ish but great experiences with some mysteries to unravel.

Golden Idol is definitely up there with Obra Dinn! Just beat both DLCs recently and had a great time with them and the base game. Can't wait for the sequel later this year. Outer Wilds is also peak ofc, and I've seen Chants of Sennaar a few times and it looks intriguing, might pick it up before the sale ends, thanks!

Darkest Files has its demo out currently and reminded me a little of Obra Dinn in some ways. Prosecutor in 1956 West Germany piecing together criminal cases, moving about 3d environments, making notes, piecing together the order of events. etc. Obviously only a demo so whether they can catch the intrigue and magic for the full game I wait to see.

Case of the Golden Idol, Outer Wilds, and The Witness are the games that come to mind for me (though the Witness is a stretch since there's no traditional story). I wish more games hit the sort of narrative driven epiphanies Obra Dinn does.

I've been working on a puzzle game inspired by Obra Dinn and Geoguesser, the puzzles are a combination of logical deduction and spatial reasoning.

If this sounds like your cup of tea you can check out the demo on Steam.

Scene Investigators. By the same people who made The Painscreek Killings. It doesn't have the same atmosphere, but is a nice detective game. Nothing so far has the magic of Obra Dinn, though.

Shadows of Doubt is fun too.

Rise of the Golden Idol came out a few days ago and has the same moment frozen in time aspect that Obra Dinn does

The full game was released earlier today (yesterday technically heh). It's very, very good. Creates a noirish atmosphere and treats the player as someone who can take a hint or spot the discrepency without handholding on its investigator mode. Big recommend if you liked that aspect of Obra Dinn.
