He and Naples were part of the party carrying the chest down to the Lazarette from the boat, but of course nobody was alive to tell the tale of what had happened out in the boats. All he saw was that three people died bringing them onto the boat, and eight people died out on the boats.
Given what he was saying, I suffered a bit of a psychotic break and blamed all the bad luck and deaths on the monsters... I think he thought the best thing would be to break into the Lazarette and get the monsters / chest out.. toss them into the ocean. I thought it likely that Naples was just in the way, or may even have been coming out of the Lazarette, and tried to stop Dahl from getting in, and ended up being wounded in the process..
when they are carrying the mermaid down (both scenes where the cook dies and the other where the stratcher hits one of the indians) you can see Naples is one of guys carrying the mermaid down, and you can see Dahl looking from afar and then going to either the armoury or already heading down to the lazarette.
So my best guess is that Dahl beeing superstitious, wants to just throw the chest, shells and all mermaids overboard, and be done with the curse (he has seen the cook beeing killed trying to get one shell from the meramaid); so probably Naples was either guarding the lazarette or trying to stop Dahl from giving the shells to the mermaids.
