How was I supposed to solve these 4 crew?
I was able to reason out almost everyone without having to do too much brute forcing (knowing 2 were correct). However at the end of the game I had 4 seaman left:

The two russians Nikishin and Toporov (and knew where they were in the story and how they died so 50%-50% and brute forced it).

That left two seaman Booth and Diom whose fates I already knew. This left me with another 50-50% which was easy to brute force.

How was I supposed to differentiate these guys?

Good job, not many get that far without some guesswork!

The Russians' beds can be found in one scene, one of the beds has a distinctive bag and pipe next to it. In later scenes, one of the Russians is carrying the same pipe and bag.

In a much later scene, Booth's bed can be seen. By that point Diom has been dead for a while so it'd make no sense for his bed to still be up.

I did some other guess work like recognizing the purser from context clues, and brute forcing a few of the deaths but mostly I would get stuck for an hour or two, then have a though. Then that ticks off 3, which allows me to quickly tick off 3 more, then 3 more. Then would get stuck for an hour. The last few crewman were a nightmare. I got the Topmen from China mostly by elimination .

You can tell some of the topmen from china by their distinctive shoes. In one scene they are sleeping in their hammocks with the shoes visible.
Also in one scene one of the chinese topmen is sitting right under his own hammock.

If you look in the early scene of the doom chapter, you can see that the hammocks of Lars Linde and Nathan Peters are still up and empty - they have made their escape attempt while the others were sleeping. Another empty hammock belongs to Booth. All other seamen with hammocks up there are either in their hammocks or somehwere else in the scene.

That's not really brute-forcing the purser as such, it's more of an educated guess. You do more or less get him by the fact that of all places to be holed up, he's in the purser's office when the crabs attack.

I got the Purser from his respectable clothing and him hugging various things to his chest in the scene where they're fleeing in the boat. I did try and find a scene where there was someone in the Purser's office but never noticed in the end.

Hearing about the Chinese Topmen's shoes is fascinating! I ended up just trying every combination until it clicked, but it's so amazing to hear about all the clues which are there if you happen to think/notice them!

That is the EXACT logic I used to guess the purser.

Yeah. Most of the fates can be easily determined by careful observation and educated guesswork, without having to brute force. Stewards usually accompany their superiors, same nationalities stick together, people of the same escape boat probably share the same fate etc.

That said, I too brute forced Chinese names by turning them in with two other guaranteed records. Shoes went completely over my head.

My most embarrassing fate is not realising that Dr. Evans was alive because I skipped the intro.

Charles Miner is french and in the lighting strike memory (IIRC soldiers part 1) you can hear a frenchman directing the rope pulling that is happening on the deck.

If you look down you can see the bald guy with the striped shirt at the end of the rope which is typically where the person giving orders to a rope crew would be (because he needs to be able to see what the crew is doing).

Additionally this is a role that a Bosun or Bosun's mate would perform as it is related the the ship's operational equipment, so even if you don't decide that the guy on the end of the rope is the one giving orders, you can still figure it out based on who else is on the rope.

Additionally his striped shirt is a very french stereotype, and he's usually seen in memories working closely with the Bosun.

You can see Alexander Booth in Doom part 1 you hear him speak in a clearly not French accent.

I had narrowed these names down to these two people and these clues eventually solved it for me. Booth's outfit resembles a loosely worn mate's outfit which threw me, but the clues that identify Miner would separate him from Diom as well.

Also Diom is from Africa (Siera Leone) and there's only one black seaman.

IIRC Nikishin and Toporov play cards nearest their own hammocks in The Cold (when Sayed dies). The other Russian, IIRC, can be identified by his pipe which he smokes during The Calling (and by his bag) so you know the other two hammocks belong to the other two Russians.

The Chinese topmen were much harder for me, and I eventually worked it out based on the striped socks one of them wears, and that one of them sits at a table near his hammock in The Doom part 2 (the artist's final memory). With 2 left I just guessed.

I think you are mistaken. Charles Miner is the Frenchman and Hamadou Diom dies in chapter 5. Alexander booth is the person I believe you are referring to in Doom 1

Yes, I was indeed mistaken and realised it a second after posting. Hopefully it's fixed along with more info now.

During one of the fight scenes with the monsters, you can peek into the purser's office through a hole in the wall, and he's hiding in there from the fight.
