If you move away from detective work, Obra Dinn reminded me a lot of Her Story and Outer Wilds, though I appreciate you said you didn't get on with Her Story.
Outer Wilds (NOT The Outer Worlds!!!) is a puzzle/adventure game set in a time loop where you gradually acquire information to figure out what's going on on various planets in a solar system. Each planet has unique characteristics, and you slowly learn how to navigate them and learn the backstory of characters through knowledge you obtain - and which you (as the player) have to interpret correctly. It's one of the most beautiful, stimulating and satisfying games I think I've ever played. Obra Dinn scratched a very similar gaming itch - though personally I did prefer The Outer Wilds overall. Whether it's similar enough for you....perhaps not. But it's still a tremendous game and well worth everybody's attention.
One of my regrets is that I misunderstood the game at first look (confusing it for a generic space exploration games like others that were releasing at the same time) so I assumed it wasn't my type of game and watched some streamers play it.
I took way too long to realize that it was actually an amazing mystery game, and by that point I'd had already seen too much.
