I don't think anything can be classified as a foreign enemy. Along with a lot of the other options that aren't used, like frozen, eaten, or escaping to anywhere that isn't Africa, having it there prevents the options you're given from spoiling the rest of the game. For obvious reasons the game can't give you unlimited options, but by giving you the large variety it does and only confirming them in pairs of three, it has the best system I've ever seen for making sure the player actually made a reasonable deduction, or at least educated guess, without holding their hand.
"Eaten" has worked for the Helmsman, he's seen being pulled by a kraken so I thought well, somebody's bound to be eaten in this game. It shows up as "devoured" in the book.
Ah OK, that makes sense.
