More scenes will help by giving you more information, which actually makes it less confusing overall. You should continue viewing the scenes, because you will get more clues for various identities including ones that were made "clear-faced" long ago. Sometimes later scenes even give names to these people.
If you watch the sketch like a hawk and see exactly when faces are unblurred, you could get hints (or at least a hint that a hint was there) about how to deduce their identity. But most people don't do this, and I didn't do it, and it's not necessary.
By the way, here's a non-spoiler that you should read: When you view all the scenes, you should go ahead and leave the ship to see the "bad ending". You'll know when you can do so because the game will tell you, and you'll be able to return to the ship again without losing progress, so don't worry.
Unrelated to that, here's one more hint that I wish I had thought of in the game, or had somebody tell me. This one isn't a story spoiler, it's a minor technique "spoiler" but for some reason I would have never in a million years thought of it myself. Maybe finish all the scenes first, and then when you decide you need a minor push so that you can solve more identities and fates yourself, come back and read this: Some people have unique clothing or accessories.
Popcorn, anyone?
Moviegoer
Worst Assessor Ever
So Fired
Also, in the ending, the letter should say the doctor SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTED your efforts were so bad... 😆
What I wound up doing was starting a new save and replaying everything. That might have been a bit extreme - you could also just go through and rewatch the scenes in chronological order.
If I could play the game again with a fresh memory, what I would do is play through the scenes once without trying to identify anyone or solve anything. I would just relax and enjoy the story, and not get caught up in the details. I think I'd probably figure a lot out just by doing that, anyway.
Then I would play through the scenes chronologically, without the pressure of the scene fading out and/or being pushed to the next corpse. I would pay attention to all the small details of the scenes, as well as where they were taking place on the ship, who was still alive at that point, etc. And I'd write all that down in a real paper notebook.
I think that I don't do well when I try to alternate between looking at the big picture and looking at minute details. I'm better off picking one mode of thinking and sticking to it. It might be different for others.
Even if the watch is shaking, you can ignore it and continue exploring the scene for clues until you press the left mouse button to activate the shaking watch.
On the second loop mark people doing very specific jobs if you see them. Knowing that a dude is a seaman or a topman can make the difference in finding the identity when you run into them(and more clues) down the line.
