Is it better to watch all the scenes, or to solve it chapter by chapter?
Ive watched 5 chapters, and solved 15 deaths. Will unlocking all the remaining chapters make 3 star identities easier to deduce, or will it just add confusion. Basically should I focus on unlocking all the scenes or on solving unblurred faces?

Sorry if someone has already asked this, I did do a cursory search but couldnt find an answer

Focus on unlocking the scenes, but take your time if you want.

More scenes will help by giving you more information, which actually makes it less confusing overall. You should continue viewing the scenes, because you will get more clues for various identities including ones that were made "clear-faced" long ago. Sometimes later scenes even give names to these people.

If you watch the sketch like a hawk and see exactly when faces are unblurred, you could get hints (or at least a hint that a hint was there) about how to deduce their identity. But most people don't do this, and I didn't do it, and it's not necessary.

By the way, here's a non-spoiler that you should read: When you view all the scenes, you should go ahead and leave the ship to see the "bad ending". You'll know when you can do so because the game will tell you, and you'll be able to return to the ship again without losing progress, so don't worry.

Also, make sure you click the ? question mark inside the book and carefully read each tutorial. There is an important hint in one of those tutorials that will help you identify many of the 3-star identities.

Unrelated to that, here's one more hint that I wish I had thought of in the game, or had somebody tell me. This one isn't a story spoiler, it's a minor technique "spoiler" but for some reason I would have never in a million years thought of it myself. Maybe finish all the scenes first, and then when you decide you need a minor push so that you can solve more identities and fates yourself, come back and read this: Some people have unique clothing or accessories.
Thanks for responding, and for such detailed advice. Will try these out.

This was my style of play. It helped early on, but the later chapters became frustrating because you're constantly being rushed along by that iris-out. And the smoke, so you usually can't go back to the memory you just saw. There are definite advantages to unlocking the scenes and going through them again chronologically.
After the iris-out you can just keep exploring the scene, there's nothing forcing you to move on.
I love it how you can solve the game at your own pace like that and how there aren't any failure states like in similar titles: "You didn't guess the murderer, game over!". Instead, you can literally watch every death scene without guessing a single fate if you want to. Actually, this would be a nice achievement idea. :D
Suggested achievement names:
Popcorn, anyone?
Moviegoer
Worst Assessor Ever
So Fired

Also, in the ending, the letter should say the doctor SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTED your efforts were so bad... 😆
For me personally, I did start to feel overwhelmed by the pile of unsolved identities.

What I wound up doing was starting a new save and replaying everything. That might have been a bit extreme - you could also just go through and rewatch the scenes in chronological order.

If I could play the game again with a fresh memory, what I would do is play through the scenes once without trying to identify anyone or solve anything. I would just relax and enjoy the story, and not get caught up in the details. I think I'd probably figure a lot out just by doing that, anyway.

Then I would play through the scenes chronologically, without the pressure of the scene fading out and/or being pushed to the next corpse. I would pay attention to all the small details of the scenes, as well as where they were taking place on the ship, who was still alive at that point, etc. And I'd write all that down in a real paper notebook.

I think that I don't do well when I try to alternate between looking at the big picture and looking at minute details. I'm better off picking one mode of thinking and sticking to it. It might be different for others.
I didn't like the iris-out either, but I realized that after it fades out and goes to the notebook, when you leave the notebook you're still in the same scene and can explore it for as long as you want.

Even if the watch is shaking, you can ignore it and continue exploring the scene for clues until you press the left mouse button to activate the shaking watch.
I say mark deaths when they happen and either take notes or solve names when they are spoken so it's not forgotten. The mind is a fiddly thing and I've personally seen people play this and go "I've only run into one name!" When they've run into 8.
On the second loop mark people doing very specific jobs if you see them. Knowing that a dude is a seaman or a topman can make the difference in finding the identity when you run into them(and more clues) down the line.
