Speared refers to when someone has been pierced by a long, piercing object (most often an actual weapon), while Spiked refers to when someone has been pierced by a short, piercing object (in the context of this game, spiked specifically refers to being spiked /by a beast/, as well.). Additionally, usually spikes come in groups, while a spear is used as one object.
Though I'm pretty sure the game is lenient enough to accept either or.
Doesn't have to be thrown.
Speared works as the cause of death for at least two deaths that I remember where the spear was being held and not thrown.
'Spiked' comes from 'spike', a small pointy stick that can pierce at its point. Small in this context is at most a forearms worth of length.
both can be thrown or fired (in game specifically) so the difference comes down to size
"Speared" is "killed by one of the jagged-toothed merpeople weapons."
"Spiked" is "impaled by one of the crab monsters' projectiles."
