"Speared" vs "spiked"
Any native English speakers who can describe the difference? Thanks.

It's a subtle difference.

Speared refers to when someone has been pierced by a long, piercing object (most often an actual weapon), while Spiked refers to when someone has been pierced by a short, piercing object (in the context of this game, spiked specifically refers to being spiked /by a beast/, as well.). Additionally, usually spikes come in groups, while a spear is used as one object.

Though I'm pretty sure the game is lenient enough to accept either or.

Not native, but "speared" means that they got pierced by a spear (ie. a weapon that someone threw at them), while "spiked" means that they got hit by spikes (sharp bits) that monsters ejected from their bodies. In the game, spikes are much shorter than spears.

Doesn't have to be thrown.

As I remember, all the spearings in the game involve throwing. But it can be pushed into someone as well.

Speared works as the cause of death for at least two deaths that I remember where the spear was being held and not thrown.

The game should accept both answers if your confused, however 'Speared' comes from the weapon 'spear', typically a long rod with a piercing point. Long in this context is about the length of a ore.

'Spiked' comes from 'spike', a small pointy stick that can pierce at its point. Small in this context is at most a forearms worth of length.

both can be thrown or fired (in game specifically) so the difference comes down to size

Short answer:

"Speared" is "killed by one of the jagged-toothed merpeople weapons."
"Spiked" is "impaled by one of the crab monsters' projectiles."

if it a beast shot its parts of body than it was spiked. if spider riders or those swimming things hand toss it an item that looks like a spear (has a blade on it) that it is speared.
