[spoilers] lifeboat scene odd logic
So, on the lifeboats, right before getting knifed It-Beng Sia, Samual Galligan shouts smth like "O'Hagan, you're strill breathing, can you row?" and in the flashback - O'Hagan has a spear firmly stuck in his neck, but Toporov is just getting pulled by one of the beasts. So the most obvious guess is that Toporov is the one being addressed and so I (and a few letsplayers that I checked) have confused Toporov and O'Hagan pretty firmly.

Why would Galligan ask if O'Hagan is still breathing if he can clearly see that he's got speared and is stooped in his seat? Anyone else find this weird?

I figured it was chaotic and he didn't know for sure.

It's a bit weird but you can identify who all the Russians are pretty easily - especially by that point. Perhaps not with name if you haven't been paying close attention but as a group They all sit together in II.2, are speaking Russian and have hammock labels a-plenty around them. Only two of them are seamen, the other guy is a topman, which makes him even easier to identify when found on rigging.. By that logic anyone who isn't Russian, an officer or steward or one of the Formosans must be O'Hagan - process of elimination.

You're right, but you only hear 2 people speaking Russian and if you already have Toporov and O'Hagan confused then it's not a stretch to assume he's just playing cards with the russians. I don't think there's another flashback where you can disambiguate Toporov and O'Hagan.

I mean, once you get them confused and have 3 fates correct then you know that you got Toporov and O'Hagan wrong, but still.

Actually you CAN 100% identify Toporov long before this scene and thus eliminate any ambiguity.

In II.2 you can see a hammock with the number 47 (47 on the crew roster is Toporov). Incidentally, Toporov is sitting right below it, which is a slight clue, but doesn't matter that much - most importantly there's a bag with a pipe in it right next to the hammock. Then, in some flashbacks in chapter III you can see Toporov entering the boat with the very same bag and pipe and in the beginning of the Calling, like IV.1, he still has his trusty pipe in his mouth and the bag is next to him.

Also, we only hear two people speak Russian but there are three hammocks around them labeled *drumroll* 45, 46 and 47 - so the three Russians. True, O'Hagan could STILL have switched places with one of them and sat at the table... IF he wasn't firmly asleep in his his hammock labeled 58 on the other side of the room.

P.S. If you didn't know the "hammock label trick" just like me, then identifying all the topmen and seamen is an immense challenge, if at all possible without resorting to brute force.

Aha, you're right.

However, I'm still wondering why did Galligan address O'Hagan like that even though he's firmly dead for a good few seconds.

Maybe he's an optimist.

Good old Galligan! Always the "glass half full" kind of guy, right?

"Nothing bad will happen if I turn my back towards this prisoner! And if something does indeed go wrong, Mr Nichols and I can always go back to the ship, totally without getting shot by anyone!"

;)

He was looking away when O'Hagan was speared, because one of the others was being pulled into the sea at the same time. The only other person he could have been addressing was on his feet at the time, just prior to being killed, so it wouldn't make sense to ask if he was breathing.

I really wish I had come up with the minor detective technique (looking carefully at clothing and accessories) but I don't think I ever would have on my own. I couldn't identify which Russkie was which in my game (randomly slotted them til it matched...) since I never realized that was a technique.

Obviously I matched uniforms to job titles when possible but didn't think to consider going above and beyond that.

They're both Irish, which given the way groups seem to work aboard the Obra Dinn probably means Galligan will rely on O'Hagan or Nichols before he does on the Russians..?

O'Hagan was in the second boat if I recall correctly: Since he's slumped over, it's not immediately apparant if he's hiding like Nick or dead. Since Galligan's alone in his boat save for the Formosan, I think he's trying to regroup before the boats drift too far away from each other. Which is why he's distracted when the Formosan makes his play.
