Something that might help is give a listen to what's being said. Listen for names (Obviously) If what a person says is in a foreign language try to attach it to a person of that same culture. How are people being adressed? There are lot of clues in the smallest most inconsiquential bits of dialouge. Be sure to listen carefully.
Remember, this is an East India Company ship and it's going to act like one. People are in certain places for a reason depending on their rank. What are certain people doing during a flashback? Could what their actions hint at what their role is? Use the boat map to get a sense at why that person might be where they are. Also, outfits, people of the same rank might be wearing a similar uniform. Check the Glossary in the back of the book it's actually a really good refference tool.
I know you might be struggling but do your best to figure things out on your own. Try to avoid looking up any answers. Discovering the fates of all the crew is one of the most satisfying things I've done recently and I'd be a shame for you to miss out too. And remember some fates might be easily determined by process of elimination.
Edit: Oh yeah one more thing, be sure to double check if you got the way someone died correct if you're sure of their identity but the game isn't accepting it as correct. I had a bit of trouble where I was 100% confident that a person died one way but it turned out to be completely wrong and I spent like an hour switching names around when I didn't have to.
It also helps in case you are having trouble due to the graphics; I misindentified a guy as Chinese because it looked like he had a queue and Chinese hat.
But it's the kind of game where if you feel stuck, just take a break and come back with a fresh perspective. Take a walk, get some fresh air. The mind has a tendency to lock hard on to small stuff and then you're unable to think of anything else, when you really should approach the problem from another angle. It's not a game to be rushed anyway, take your time.
I admit to looking up a couple of fates in the guide, mostly because I missed something minor, or for some fates where the only way is a process of elimination. A couple of them are are just guesswork after you narrow things down, unless you catch every little hint.
You might even have found all the corpses, but there might still be a lot of deductions to be made. or small stuff you've missed. Revisit the scenes and make sure to look at everything, most importantly *look up* in the outside scenes, as it's easy to just focus on the ground when some stuff happens above. Or outside of the ship itself, especially in the Doom scenes.
Best of luck, it's a great game :)
