Point of no return?
I just finished all flashbacks, and the tender boat guy screams at me to finish up and leave the ship – I guess that is the point of no return that ends the game?

What should I do - is this the time to find out the rest of the remaining 36 fates I haven't solved yet? Can I finish now, get a bad (?) ending, and return to this point (there doesn't seem to be a save state?) to "clean up"?

EDIT: Tested it out, you can leave the boat with the book unfinished, the "bad" end gave me a good laugh. After that, you can seamlessly continue your save game right before you left the ship, so you don't have to replay anything. (Click on "rewind")

If you want to, you can go see the "bad" ending now, and you will get the option to go back to the ship and finish afterwards. You really won't miss much if you skip it though, just an achievement and some extra text, and there is nothing stopping you from staying on the ship until you're finished.

Sounds like I should get the "bad" ending now for maximum content experience?

Otherwise, when would be the best time to abandon ship?

The game will tell you when to leave.

The tender Boat guy is screaming at me because of an incoming storm. I'd say that's literally the game telling me to leave. Hence my question.

Once you solve all of the fates(except for the two in the 'Bargain' chapter) it will literally tell you that there's nothing left to do on the ship. Once you hear that then you know it will be time to get on the boat.

He's not the game telling you to leave. He's a grumpy old dude in the rain. The game will tell you to leave in the same way it confirms fates: with explicit 3rd person text-over.

so, yeah, you can stay as long as you need. And if you want to complete the game, you need to stay until every last one is solved. There will be 2-3 characters who you won't have to say what their fate is. It is definitely a point of no return, but the save file lets you rewind.

I got three different endings. The "you did horrible" ending, the "you did good but not good enough" and then the perfect ending which reveals the "Bargain" chapter.

To elaborate; The boatman screams at you to leave when there are no new scenes left to see; whether you've picked up on the clues or not.

The game tells you (in text) there's nothing left to be found when you've solved everything you could have possibly solved (so everything but the Bargain chapter).
