"Controller"?
I was just going to try it out (might as well do that while waiting for the cards) -- but despite the shop page telling me "partial controller support", nothing seems to make that happen.

It's an XBox-360 pad, which makes it even more surprising. Could this be "the first game" that works opposite to everything else, and doesn't support these?

Oh well... idling for cards it is, then.

For future reference the 'partial controller support' tag means that the specified game is controller compatible, but you need to use a keyboard at some point, usually for main menus or configuration purposes. Dustforce is the latter; if you press ESC and click on the options tab, you can freely bind controls.

Hm... I tried that, but didn't notice anything controller related. But, I guess it's time to question my sanity, and check again :-)

EDIT: oh... now I get it. You actually have to rebind the keys :-) Thanks.

It's kinda weird they didn't simply bind ESC to controllers start button. That would've made game completely playable with controller and seeing how game plays controller is maybe even better control method to begin with.

Well, games usually just accept both methods. There's nothing wrong with accepting both keyboard and controller inputs at the same time.

In fact, rebinding the keys was somewhat difficult as I had to choose buttons for unknown functions, making this pretty much a guesswork. As it turns out, the scheme I chose didn't allow pressing both attack buttons...

I very much prefer game developers to put a few minutes of thought into the control schemes, and provide a reasonable default even if they allow changing the bindings. After all, they know the game better than I do.

I agree that direct controller compatibility would have been nice, but the current implementation is only a small inconvenience.

Oh, and since you're using a 360 controller, it's best you know that the absolutely atrocious d-pad will completely cripple you if you try to use it in Dustforce. The stick also offers a bit less precision than is ideal for the game, but it's still playable.

Yeah well, most games don't use it for a reason :-) And if they do it's for harmless stuff like changing weapons.

For me it does switch those controls on fly. It automatically changes binding according to which device I press so that's like it should be. Weird that it doesn't work for you.

But yeah few presets including 360 and playstation button schemes would've been really nice addition.

Actually I find playing 2D games with 360 stick pretty good. Of course nothing beats really good d-pad but 360 stick is pretty good secondary option. No sane person uses 360 d-pad for movement.

Right, just putting it out there because it's especially bad for Dustforce due to how important directional inputs are. That's also why a stick is generally inferior to a keyboard or a good d-pad; tilting slightly too high or low can end up messing up your rhythm at times.

OK I tried it out and 360 stick is definitely bad with this game compared to mechanical keyboard. For some reason trying to have to direction inputs require much too specific direction making it fail.

This would be much easier game with controller though. I guess I'll get my PS3 controller instead.

Yeah well, I had too much trouble even getting through the tutortials (although the one with the slopes didn't usually need that speedup thing as you could just double jump), then didn't even make it out of that initial room with the 3 tutorial doors.

Could be my button mashing skills or broken controller support -- don't care much. I don't "need" to play that game :-)

Input is very important, but Dustforce devs are very archaic. They only thing they did - allowed you to map some buttons and called it a day. That's a joke of a controller support. Especially for a platform game. People who like them usually prefer gamepads instead of keyboard. It's not typing tutor software to rely on text input device. I wonder if there is anyone who actually played local multiplayer in this game.

My gosh. They really were freaking lazy on that. As a Designer I would be terribly ashamed of presenting a game like that. I regret buying that on the humble bundle. I could have bought a beer for that money...

This sucks. I always use steam big picture mode along with my chinese Foyu controller (dualshock 2 copy lel). Team fortress 2, super hexagon, no more room in hell, etc, all work fine with a controller, except for this street dusting megaman clone. For real? This is would be easier to play games like this with a controller than with a keyboard. I payed for this, why the heck there is no controller support?
Nocturne Feb 22, 2015 @ 1:59am
Pete, you can try rebinding your controls by pressing escape and then going to options. You'll need a keyboard (just to rebind the keys, past that it isn't necessary) of course, which is a slight inconvenience. Your controller should be supported if it's just DS2, I haven't yet run in to anything that I can't get to work in Dustforce.
