The best kind of jank.

This game is very unique and its been on my radar for a few years now, i enjoyed it more than i suffered and eventually thrived.
the whole game feels like one stream of thought zapped into me like its an alien and I'm a hyper advanced AI.
would recommend if you can deal with something rough around the edges.

i'd be lying if i said that brigand did not routinely frustrate me in the roughly 25-ish hours it took to beat it, but i would ALSO be lying if i said that it did not have an extremely intriguing quality that kept me hooked. there's something irresistibly unique about a game like this, that, for better or for worse, clearly comes from such a singular vision.

its graphics, although maybe simplistic, ooze both charm and a weird sense of coolness that can only be produced naturally. its writing, although i DO wish there was more of it, is drenched in personality that clearly comes from its developer. its gameplay / combat is where most of the frustrations come in, but i Can respect the vision it clearly has. it consists of a bunch of weird ideas, not all of which totally mesh, but all of which do stand out as pretty unique. this is a game that kind of comes from that 'immersive sim' world, but at the same time possesses insanely harsh combat that, by the end of the game, generally spells death within maybe a second or two of an enemy spotting you before you spot them. its a pretty unconventional combo when compared to the usual slower pace of that genre.

i do see how that difficulty could ward some people off - it definitely pissed me off a few times (♥♥♥♥ you Scumlands and Jungle and Ruins) but it also made this one of the only games i've played in a long time where i felt truly satisfied with myself after managing to get through a particularly hard section. plus - there are a number of fun, alternate ways you can get through some of the harder sections of the game, and if you figure out something (whether it's intended or not) you generally feel a little bit like a genius. so that's cool. really, the frequent deaths are only truly irritating thanks to brigand's insanely long load times. i often found myself wishing i could immediately throw myself at a challenge again, but instead i was stuck looking at a loading screen for thirty seconds.

regardless, this game is cool, eight dollars, and stands out really firmly to me as one of the most interesting indie projects made in the past decade or so. you should probably buy it!

I have to preface it that i did complete the game on normal. It is doable if you adapt and keep reloading the save. I liked the atmosphere and characters. The lore is very nice and looks to be an even more alien version of Fallout. Graphics are good, except for the choice of not including any outline or indicator for items on the ground, since the meshes are so low-res,low-poly, the dev needed to create an alternative. It is not a "challange" to try to find a gray key on a gray ground if it is 1990s graphics.

However, it is not a great enjoyable experience to finish the game. The combat is SOOO FAST, you die or kill in 2 secs, most of the game. Autoguns that insta mow you down, or rocket launchers in a 2x2m area. Very bad combat design and most of the game is reliant on it. If you look at Deus ex (clearly the inspiration), they dont just give the enemies 2 second kill time, they put the tough enemies in places you can take cover/move around. 3 sec death rattle, although interesting, highlights the failures of the balancing. It is very frustrating to finish the get out of the "Enclave Prison" sequence.

Although an interesting game, i cannot recommend it until some balancing and encounter design improvement occurs. Which i doubt.

If you really have to play: skill charisma to 10 and get the perks. Pistol is only important up to chapter 4 ish. Hardware material collecting is a joke with 10 slots. Chemistry as well. Melee skill is out of question besides picking up rockets. Around chapter 4, you need software, and skill it until the end. Willpower is the real "level up".
