WB Nemesis Patent
I'm curious if this happening is going to affect the systems in this game at all. There are some similarities. I hope it doesn't bring too much trouble, Star Renegades is obviously a project done with love and dedication.

That's gonna suck...

From an article I read, it mentioned WB would be able to take legal action against *upcoming* titles that used a system deemed too close to theirs.

Star Renegades might be in the clear because it was created before the patent goes into effect at the end of Feb 2021.

Another jerk move by WB :P

imagine if this was delayed, they would have had to scratch the whole thing

If they have any thoughts towards a "Star Renegades 2", then unless they totally remove the system, it probably won't happen.

Ugh, WB is the worst. Their actions have far, far reaching implications.

To be fair, the way it is implemented in SR, "Nemesis system" just means the game will spawn same elites over and over until they are killed, with a chance to bring one back instead of generating new one. I suppose at some point the plans were more invloved (as trailers suggest), but apparently devs scrapped most of the system. Honestly, it's better that way, given realities of actual SR's gameplay.

Nemesis systems suck anyway. In games like SoW if you die to a boss, that boss becomes stronger, making it even harder to kill next time. It's pretty stupid. And anything you kill just gets replaced by random generated peons, making any kills even less meaningful. Who would want to patent this crap lol.

I dunno, I rather enjoy the concept of certain enemies having a "memory" of you, and reacting in a dynamic way to things you've done, or encounters you've had, rather than just being procedurallly scripted to.

And as far as enemies getting stronger, to be fair, generally the player character does, too. Gaining new powers, skills, equipment, allies, etc. Not to mention the player getting more skilled with practice.

I've read this argument many times. It fully rests on the problem of boss becomes stronger thus the game gets harder. But, that can be balanced so many ways. In SoW, that boss typically is promoted up the heirarchy, then peons join in. There are so many ways to level up, by the time you get to Act 3 in even the hardest difficulty all bosses are a complete joke. Doesn't matter how many times you die to these bosses, the fact that it "makes the game harder" is an illusion from the player not seeing the forest for the trees.

Also, the bosses aren't even hard if you just exploit their weaknesses, even in the beginning. You can easily defeat a captain who is several levels above you (10-20 levels even) - and when you recruit captains you can have them all ambush one if you are having troubles.

Nemesis system is freaken awesome - its not crap

A patent is not a copyright. I really doubt WB can do anything about other games using similar gameplay mechanics. The only thing that is really protected is the name of the system. This patent is only a tool for WB to go to court against other companies. The gameplay mechanic cannot be patented, it's like someone make a patent for a music chord or a way of directing movies.
