Can't move ladder

I'm right in the beginning of the game, and already a basic function doesn't work. I can grab the ladder int he bookstore with the A button on my controller, but moving the stick forwards or back just results in the character letting go of the ladder. I can move the ladder just fine with the keyboard; holding space and moving the character forwards and back makes the ladder move, but not with the controller. What the hell is this?
