There is no grinding for planes like in WT. You have access to almost all planes/vehicles from the get go. There are some advance aircraft you spend points for. For bombers this is the B-29, AR234 (german jet bomber) and the very fast late war Mosquito Mk16. You aquire perk points to fly these special aircraft/vehicles by playing the game. The better you play the game the more perk points you get. But remember almost all the aircraft/vehicles are completly accessable by the new player the minute he gets into the main arena. The perk planes I mentioned above are available in other arenas, maps or custom arenas you can setup for yourself and friends without needing points.
The MA (main arena) is something of a soap box in that you can do pretty much whatever you want. Group team combined combat, solo attacks, sight seeing, crashing bombers into mountains for the fun of it, long distance high altitude heavy bomber runs to strategic targets or lettng cybro mess with your mind on why he is living in a hangar with the Knights. :p
I have played WT but IL2bos. Compared to WT the flight envelope is far more realistic for each individual ac in the game. Also there far more communication in real time between team mates using both the built in audio vox and the text works well compared to WT imo. AH is very much a social game in that players make long term friends or you can fly solo and not commuicate with anyone.
I hope this has helped. Ask me any questions here.
AH has a nice balance of realistic physics whilst not being over the top in terms of Icons and engine management. The learning curve is steep but there is plenty of help and informtation online about key mappings and settings etc.
It's fun flying with hundreds of people at the same time in aircraft that fly properly.

Here's a video from another scenario, but in this one, I was flying bombers:

All the while, there were roughly 200-300 people on during these times.
Here is a more recent video for you to check out:

Aces High III download is 1.55 GB from what I see on the official HTC page.
On my 3.0 Mb/sec DL it takes me about 1.3 hours to DL if i remember correctly.
The following is my experience from playing AH in the Meelee/main arena.
Each time the war is won, the game will end, then when you jump back into the meelee/main arena you will DL a new map which is about 15 MB and on my computer takes about 2 - 3 minutes. After you have a particular map DLed then you dont have to DL it anymore. The DL for a new map is automatically and I think the only thing you will nee to do is giver you pc permission to DL the new map.
If you have specific questions, I can try to answer here in this thread.
