Large quests take 30~40 min overall to complete, so losing all of that progress by being thrown into a hole is not good design.
But the last time I played this thing was over 10 years ago. And I'm not having any problems (Playing on Hard), except for how slow the game is.
And no, unlike the big boy above said, this has nothing to do with "oldschool gaming". This is just a poorly implemented bad idea. This kind of thing didn't happen often even in the PS2 era.
But it's such an old game that if you're here, it's because you chose to deal with these inconveniences. It's not as bad as it first appears.
