Yume Nikki

Yume Nikki

How / why is this free?
I've always heard about this game ever since I saw the memes and wanted to play it. Just curious, how / why is it free?

It's always been free, ever since it was released independently in 2004.

Nobody really knows. Maybe it was due to the fact that it was a homebrew game.

I know it's an unusual concept in the times of Steam Greenlight, but back in the day where Yume Nikki was actually made, people would have laughed in your face if you said you wanted money for your RPG Maker game.

Then again, the developers typically never planned a commercial release anyway.

Cool. so is uboa a big part of the game, or a hidden secret that I need to follow guides to unlock..?

Hidden secret. Even if you have a guide, it can be annoying to spawn the damn thing.

It was quite easy for me. Just leave the room and come back, flip the switch, didin't work? Do it again.

Because Masada sensei loves everyone equally.

Because not everything is created to gain economical value. I like to imagine YN as a personal collection of ideas, stories, dreams and imaginations KIKIYAMA made into an unique experience for everyone to explore. Something you make for your own pleasure and needs, not for gaining money. (That's just my opinion tho)
And also because the indie game mentality and the Steam greenlight/early access scam didn't even exist 14 years ago.

On the other hand KADOKAWA really wanted to cash the YN success by making that manga adaptation, so they could then make merchandise for it. KIKIYAMA was never involved in that project, as it's clearly stated it's not canon.

UBOA is one of the various hidden events. I'd suggest to find it yourself, but if you are curious...

Whenever you enter Poniko's house in the Pink Shoal, there is 1/64 chance that switching off the light in the room makes UBOA appears. If switching lights doesn't trigger it,
just get out the room and enter again for another chance.

I don't think you understand what a "homebrew" game is, a homebrew is an indie game made on proprietary platforms (most often consoles) that are not supposed to support user made games.
Since yume nikki is a pc game it's not really a homebrew but just an indie game

I'm not gonna argue since I'm bad at arguing.

There is nothing to argue about lol

I dunno why but even in the yume nikki website, the game is described as a "自作ゲーム" which translates to "homebrew", maybe it's just a translation error and "自作" refers to "self made" and has nothing to do with homebrew games

自作ゲーム means "Self-made game", homebrew has significantly different connotations.
