This has both good and bad points, but in the end, don't expect to progress if you haven't been grinding enough, or chose a less than optimal party composition, or aren't using all the tools available to you.
I found it very helpful to have the NPC "Little Rosy" in my party (strong magic making the first fights go easy) , you can find her at one of the 5 starting locations . Also you better create your own party instead of using the default 'Quick Start' Party... please also take a look at the Guides for the game (here at steam) :)
Wait a moment I did play hardcore RPGs like Might and Magic or The Bards Tale II, Eye of The Beholder or Wizardry, but even with that experience I feel like this game is unfinished or unbalanced. I am no kiddo
It's one of the greatest CRPGs of all time. I would restart, and see if you get a friendlier startling location. Unlike most games, it starts you off somewhere random.
I did plan my characters and tried to multi class them in directions that made sense, but it's still seems very easy once you reach a certain point. It's still a fun game though, especially if you grew up on these types of games in the 90s. Get major nostalgia feelings for sure when playing this game.
