Stealth skill

Is it useful for spellcasters with low hp? Will hidden char be safe from long-range attack or AOE spell?

I tried to hide party of 4 low level chars in fight, they had low stealth skill, but even when they managed to get hidden icon, they stil got hit/debuffed

Come on, I don't see it covered in manual or guides. Is stealth useless for anyone except backstabing chars, or it can be useful for others when high enough?

Iirc, Stealth only gives a bonus to weapon damage dealt in status hidden. From my games a while ago, it did not seem to affect defense.

Thanks. Then, instead maybe it makes sense to teach some evasion to low hp casters?
