The biggest advantages are that they have the Lethal Blow skill (chance of instant killing) and that they are the only class you cannot multiclass into from other classes.

Also, some good races have high multiplier bonuses for Metalsmith, meaning you get more skill points on each level up and more points in the beginning when you roll the character, as well as more resistance points:

The metallrgy/forging works now and lets you increase the AC of armor pieces. However this bonus goes away when that armor is hit numerous times in fights, so that you need to do it again and again. Overall, forging is not really necessary.

Are there any lethal hammers in game or something? Haven't found anything yet for my metalsmith other than forge hammer I got at start. Other classes got plenty of lethal weapons. I'm at Samhain now, no idea how far it is into the game.

There are not lethal Hammers or Maces: http://grimoire.wiki/index.php/Items#List_of_the_best_weapons_.28SPOILERS.29

But the Metalsmith can use other weapons as well, so it doesn't have to be a Hammer.

Crackatoa. What a nice name. Brilliant!

@Maggotheart, maybe you could edit your post with a spoiler warning?

Lots of inaccuracies on the wiki.

Moon Singer is from one of the perk chests. That's arguably the best thing you can get from the perk chests, it rivals the caliburnus, and doesn't have its restrictions, so a pirate or assassin, or jester can use it.

The in-game assaying says that Moon Singer is from the Shrine of the Psychopomp.

And if there are indeed "many" inaccuracies in the wiki, then simply list them and they will corrected.

Got Moon Singer from perk chest at Samhain catacombs or whatever that map was called. It's bloody awesome, turned my ranger into a killing machine.

Okay, I guess the Assaying info is wrong then.
