Start with prestige class and end with normal class?
When I look at the required experience for higher levels there is a enormous difference between prestige classes and non-prestige classes.

I have a theory: Is it not better to start as, lets say, an assassin (so you get the skills a thief does not have), switch to thief at lev 4 and finish the game with a thief which will be approximately 3 times higher level then your assassin? The only downside I see is the attribute hit at level 4 when you switch to thief, but this is compensated by the many extra levels you will get with a thief.

You're right. The most powerful ending characters multiclass from typical through elites and then settle around level 10 at typical classes. This is the experience of many other players. By that time they are seriously buffed out and good at almost everything.

If you put bonus points into stats to get yourself closer to prestige classes you can start with a traditional class which is generally more survivable and powerful early game and end prestige. I can’t recall if it resets to class minimums when you switch to multiclass and if it does you are looking at a one way trip going from prestige to regular. Meanwhile prestige almost always meets regular class minimums. If that makes sense.

As far as the Jester goes, you will need to multiclass several times and save the extra attribute points from the level ups until you arrive at a Bard. The attribute requirements of the Jester are so high that switching to something else afterwards doesn't make sense - and you won't have many classes left to multiclass into to get the attribute points back up.

The Assassin seems to be the only prestige class that makes sense at character creation. It's relatively easy to roll and you will indeed keep all its cool skills after switching to other professions.

The Templar is only rollable with a Durendil, which I would rather not use.

And the Pirate needs ALL 48 points to be rolled with a Rhattu, which is almost impossible.

If I haven't said before, thanks @Lady Error for all the information. Very helpful.

You're welcome. I think I might start another playthrough with a lot of multiclassing once the skill points bug is fixed for character creation. On my first playthrough I used 6 NPC's, which cannot be multiclassed - so I only had the Naga go the WAR-BER-RAN-THI-PIR route.

One thing that became clear is that Saurians are not suited for multiclassing due to very low attributes in some areas - which are required by many of the classes.

I have a question too:

With the multiplier bonus you get more skill points on each level up. After you change class, do you keep getting the extra skill points on level up from the original class?

Also, do resistances increase on level up at all? Or is it only the natural race resistances plus gear (and magic spells) that has an influence on resistance levels?

The resistance table is now also in the Wiki, sorted by the total number of resistance points of each race - which might be another thing to consider in character creation:

Are you sure about that? That is indeed an important info I haven't seen yet. Needs to be included in the Wiki too.

In that case, it is even more important to start with a good bonus multiplier race/class combination, since they keep the bonus resistances and might even keep the bonus skill points after multiclassing.

I wish there were some incentive -- ANY incentive -- to just sticking it out and specializing in one class only. (Or even two classes only.)

It creates great variability in game play if most characters begin to top out at level 10. It is fun to switch careers during the game and undertake a new series of skills and to try to develop the same character in a new way while the game is underway. If you compare Grimoire with your average shooter/exp quest you will see it can be quite an experience finishing just one game with all the things that happen to your characters, including their changes of profession. I wanted to make it variable enough that it is worth playing again from a new starting location and with a whole new party to experience things differently.

STARTIFER ARE YOU THE ANAL RETENTIVE WHO HAS NOW BEEN PLAYING THE GAME FOR 152 HOURS, GAVE IT A NEGATIVE REVIEW AND HAS BEEN PLAYING IT WITH MULTIPLE PARTIES BUT STILL INSISTS IT IS "NOT WORTH PLAYING?"

NO BUT REALLY

HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN EXACTLY

STARTIFER DO YOU NEED TO GET A MESSAGE OUT, ARE YOU BEING HELD AGAINST YOUR WILL SOMEWHERE? WHAT SHOULD WE TELL POLICE? DOES "I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE IT" ACTUALLY MEAN "THEY ARE KEEPING ME IN A DARKENED ROOM WITH A HOOD OVER MY HEAD BETWEEN MEALS. I THINK I CAN HEAR THE OCEAN NEARBY?"

Back to topic

So what i see are the most important rules for multiclassing (assume at level 8):

1. Your final class has to be a melee class so that you have a wider range in equipment and can wear plate armor
2. Your final class has to be a regular class so that experience requirements in the final carreer are much more gentle than the prestige class

So first I had this 9 phase carreer plan for my Metalsmith Barrower, ending with templar, but a change in his path and ending with warrior for a much better experience requirement in his final carreer seems like a better plan now:

First idea : Metalsmith/warrior/berserker/ranger/assassin/thief/bard/cleric/templar
New idea: Metalsmith/berserker/ranger/assassin/thief/bard/cleric/templar/warrior

Only thing is that I am not sure what the average of total xp in the game when I meet the final boss....
