Grimoire : Heralds of the Winged Exemplar

Grimoire : Heralds of the Winged Exemplar

the clang and generally sound effects keep me away from this game.
is nice that the game is still updated but there is stuff that is begging for improvement, and in fact is unchanged since the 2013 demo.
i watched some of latest versions, streams of this game, tried even a old demo...
since the game is advertised as a very long adventure, and the price is expensive i wanted to see how it is like. so there is my feedback:

you advertise this game as very long but its unbearable for longer than xx minutes of gameplay, because of the same repeative sound effects.
doesn't matter if you hit with wooden mace, spear, sword, (fist?) it's the same ugly high-pitched clang.
how you can listen to same ear ♥♥♥♥♥♥ clang for 600 hours?
when the game is long i expect sound effects to be pleasant for the ear, making me want to play more of it. to be clear, i listen to various types of niche metal, experimental, ost, ambient music, so i'm not one of these people who complain about nothing but i have ear for sounds and can sense if something is rushed and made out carelessly.

use fruity loops or smth to polish the sound effects, i bet these are just raw stock sounds thrown in without any post-processing thought, mixing/mastering etc. it would be even more acceptable if the sound effects were some low raw 8 bit and thats the real meaning of oldschool that wont worn you up, even after long marathon of gameplay.

other than that, graphics clash. terrain+interface vs portraits+some monster sprites, some amazing photoshop skills here... male doll (the one that show up equipped items in green) is standard for all characters even when they are females.

this combat sfx in a nutshell:

extend to 600 hours...

and for the record, that i don't see anything positive about the game, i like complexity of character sheet, old school interface, writing, secret passages and the talk to npc system (although it need some command list)
oh and this game totally need a compass as part of interface. its really easy to get lost, i remember i played some dungeon crawlers that had compass as feature long time ago.

oja:
This game was made from one dude. You do realize most games have a dedicated sound engineer or developer for a game. Yes the audio is terrible. Yes the audio is old school. Yes it is repititve, but it is one guy making it. I am sure Cleve doesn't have access to a state of the art sound studio, and probably doesn't have the sound tools to make high end audio..

You can get a compass like thing with magic.

if the dev put so much effort and time in making this game, why would it be all ruined by cheap sound effects? he could atleast try to improve them slightly, i guess is not much effort try to fix one 5sec long clang audio that you hear 80% of the game, to be more pleasant to ear. if he only tried to experiment some with sound effects, i'm sure he'll come up with better than this after 15 minutes of adjusting simple tone.

The game was made beginning back in something like 1997? Something like that.. this type of sound effect was pretty common back then in this style of RPG, and if you listed to a Let's Play of Wizardry 6 or 7, it's basically the exact same sound effect. For the majority of the audience this game was intended, I don't think that the sound effects will be a major turn off. That said, if it's not your cup of tea, it's not your cup of tea. Perhaps the sound file is something that could be swapped out by the user to something less irritating, I don't know. Look in the local files and see.

i see, i didn't know wizardry had such high pitched sound effects... maybe it also depends on types of old sound cards used in the old game: like gravis ultrasound and other i dont remember. though grimoire sounds even in comparison are much heavier.

indeed it would be best if grimoire had some moding possibility especially for basic sound effects and character portraits.

i saw grimoire early beta portraits and these were pixelated. this photoshoped type of portraits more fit games like m&m that uses real 3d imo.

It would be cool if V2 had more sound effects. Maybe something could be programmed to warp the hit sound to make it deeper if it does more damage. Or hit sounds that change given the armor type.

i think i was just overreacting.
i havent played real old school game (dos era) for very long time,
maybe more than 5 years.
this game can be only vital bastion of dungeon blobbers with still going on updates and active community,
in fact there aren't many classic blobbers on steam outside wizardry, stonekeep and dragon wars.
i'm using specifically term "blobbers" because these are only wizardry like games with 1 screen movement, and party in the form of a screen. the term was popularised by clave himself and i think is good way to distinguish it from other isometric roguelike dungeon crawlers that are plenty of on steam.
make sure to tag any steam game with 1st person view, 1 frame screen movement, party as a form of screen: "dungeon blobber", make blobbers great again.

I think the sound effects were pretty spot on for a game like this, to be honest. Definitely have that 90s vibe to them.

if i buy the game you will try to fix the sounds? + i havent pirated it, I RESPECT YOUR WORK AND BELIEVE THAT THE GAME OFFER GREAT AMOUNT OF ORIGINAL MADE CONTENT. so to say i just watched streams (some were 4 hours long, so I already understand a lot of game mechanics), the stuff i picked up you can easy see in the videos you/or people uploaded on the yt. the thread is made so ppl can convince me to get it or not, if you can make portraits and sound effects switchable that would be nice. since i'm not going to play 600 hours with sound effect and portraits i don't like. that would also fix a general issue, since everyone would be able to change it with 2 clicks without need of paid graphic artists, dj's.
customization is also reason why i loved classic rpgs such as bg, you could change sounds and portraits to yourself for example lol.
don't look on my steam playtime the most games i played on cds or floppy.
the another reason why i'm hesitant to get it or not it's because of digital version of game, for digital game it cost a lot but when i think about it how much time you put in making it, makes sense but still, hmm, decisions, decisions. anyway i will follow grimoire updates and see if anything changes in the future. gl with your project.

Exactly! I think the sounds are great. I wouldn't mind more sound options, but I'm not complaining.

Go play something else dude, I love the return to 90's feel and atmosphere, quite tired of people that complain about silly things, jsut go get gta 5 or something if you dont like this. I love the old style wind sounds and clang. Its like complaining text based roguelike nethack has ♥♥♥♥ graphics.

If you think that you are a liar. There are plenty of examples where honest responses recieved legitimate attention by Cleve as well as others here.

Why don't you just find a hole and crawl back into it dumb animal.
