As for resisting spells, what are you trying to hit it with and what Skill levels do your magic users have? In Version 1.2.0.26-R it is very difficult to hit enemies with little to no skill in the magic type they are trying to use. Little Rosy, a recruitable NPC, should be able to hit it with Magic Missile if you have her in the party, so you can utilize her if you are feeling stuck. If you do not want to keep her you could dump her after you are done. Any original character you dismiss to make room for her can be found as a Skeleton in Shrine of the Raptor. Just click the Skeleton and they will rejoin the party alive.
I didn't actually know the specific number you start to see good results. I've just been pumping them like crazy with much success. I assume that number is more for early game enemies? Or does the Skill really cap that low?
To recruit an NPC you first have to find them, then right click any character's action icon and choose Recruit at the bottom of the list. You can also use the tiny arrows underneath it to scroll to the Handshake Icon and click that. If the character is recruitable (some cannot be recruited, others require a task to be completed), you will be prompted to dismiss a character to make room for them. The game will tell you that the dismissed character is dismissed "forever", but that is not true with very few and mostly bug related exceptions. Keep in mind that while dismissed original characters will keep their stats, skills, and magic learned before being dismissed, NPCs will not. If you don't already know, the action icon is the circular button next to each portrait. The default icon when speaking to NPCs is the Word Bubble, which represents Talk.
The Dev could tell you what Skill is needed to for Fireball for sure. I know that the damage is affected by the Alchemy Skill, but it may be affected by Sorcery as well. I've been putting points into both equally and have not yet tested them individually. Using higher ranks fo the spell should help as well, if your magic user has the magic points for it. As for if it is increased with use... I can't say for sure. I don't think I have ever seen it, even with high INT and WIS, though I often speed through battles by holding down Enter so I could have easily missed it. Could be that I am just very unlucky though. Fortunately most casters get a decent amount of Skill Points you can use after leveling so even if they don't you shouldn't have much trouble.
Bone Dagger is a magic weapon, and might be the earliest one you can get. You can find three static magic weapons in Samhain Mausoleum. Two require Perk Keys., so you could wait until you get there and return to the Spirit Caves later if that's something you'd like to do. Magic casting staves, wands and rods are also an option for magic damage, and I can tell you with certainty that characters that use them will slowly build up Skill points for them as long as they have at least one point in Invocation. It's slow, but it gives a use for any Fizzlesticks you might find.
As far as a spell, I can tell you that the Enchanted Blade spell does not give a magical effect to weapons. Bless might, but I haven't tested it. There are a lot of opportunities to get a Bless Spellbook, so you could give it a try and see if it works.
I just realized that might actually be a good modification to Enchanted Blade, after all, the name of the spell practically implies it. I will be adding this in the next update. So when Enchanted Blade is cast (appears as floating orb) all weapons will effectively act as magical weapons. I think this is a pretty good addition and balanced. You don't want magic weapons that can hit noncorporeal creatures to be a dime a dozen but this allows the party to at least win combats with such (if they cast this spell) despite not having some/any magic weapons.
This change is going to be a great addition to the game. Can't wait to give it a good test run when it is implemented.
What needs to be 5 or higher? What skills are associated with spellcasting? Could you be any more vague?!?!
