Is there any penalty of not taking the Tablet?
What if I just let the Lachesis tab stay in the chest there?

It won't be in your inventory. You want to pick it up later? Or you just want to leave it there and ignore that aspect of the adventure?

What do you expect to happen?

It gets stolen? Seems like Cleve has complex interactions with NPCs when you possess the tablet. So why not just leave it there and pick it later when you won't get robbed for it

I think you can just run from the encounter. Or immediately steal it back from the NPC who took it and he's none the wiser.
