pressure sensitive controls

i remember playing this on ps2 and being able to perfectly control when i shot a little 3 round burst or a single big shot, doing a quick slash or winding up to cut some one in half with my sword
but now on pc im using an xbbox controller ofcourse, as thats the standard for pc games
but i dont seem to have the same control of my shots and sword
i try as hard as i can to gently push down, yet it still seems a 50/50 on if i do the light 3 round burst or the single big shot
do i specifically need a ps2 controller for this, does a more modern ps controller still have the pressure sensitive buttons, or am i imagining things and have my fingers just gotten clumsy and im pressing down too hard

Ps3 was the last controller to have pressure sensitive controls. This is a modern port so, we can assume the removed the code for the analog buttons except for the Pro control settings which change sub weapons to RightTrigger.
Tap/button mash to get the standard shot but hold the square/X button to get the bigger shot off. However I'm not sure of quick slashing. The only quick slash I know of is the burst slash.
