In the worst case scenario, just watch it on youtube.
Also 1 is really short and it feels like a prototype, but it's far from "trash".
That said, the first one has a world map (takes place in a space colony), it has adventure elements (software as glorified keycards, and you revisit areas), a sniper subweapon and some nice music.
There's a whole necessity to watch out for what you're destroying, since you can get an early game over if you go beserk (but don't be intimidated, it's not hard to avoid this scenario).
However, when you get to ZoE2, as soon as you hop into Jehuty and start slashing, you won't wish for anything else.
Like someone above said, you can watch a playthrough on YT if you got 3 spare hours left.
Ultimately though, the first game can be skipped because many of the story elements are pushed through to the sequel. There are really only two pieces from the first you encounter that you might not understand with it such as one particular boss but you pick up on the idea quick enough. Then you have a character you run into that summarizes the events by boiling them to their core elements if I remember right.
