Ashen

To those that were looking forward to try this game
Honestly don't expect too much from Ashen, imo this game is highly overpriced, the gameplay isn't that good but the game is good looking, the fighting feels very poorly designed, there's only 5 bosses in the game, 0 optional, the difficulty is very poorly set in this game, the only thing that makes the game difficult is that bosses and mobs are super huge health bags and you deal zero damage, the game uses the same mobs for almost the whole game so you will get used to ennemies attacking and it rarely gets different.

Idk I just feel like most of the effort put in this game was how to make the game good looking but not good to play, it feels kinda bad.

This game does not have the Dark Souls flavour you might be looking for.

Also I think the game was built to be a coop game, I played alone with the npcs following me around and it felt like ♥♥♥♥ that they were doing 4 times more damage than me even tho I had the best gear I could find and upgraded to its max level, the decisions the devs took for this game regarding the gameplay progression feel so bad and weird

I like it a lot and 39.99 isnt overpriced LOL ...PC gamers are so weird..pays a thousand or more on a pc but its a problem when a game cost more than 20 dollars....hmmm

OP has no idea what he's talking about. Ashen is a good Soulslike game that the fans of the genre are going to enjoy. It has its flaws but overall quality game.

40 bucks for 5 bosses and somewhere around 10 hours of playtime and I did all the sidequests, it's halfway through the price of an average indie game and a triple A game price, this has nothing to do with the price of my computer, why are you even comparing this it makes no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense, it's like saying you're not allowed to complain about the price of gas because my car is more expensive than your car ?????

I didn't say it's garbage, I'm not saying it's the best game ever either, it's decent, but in my humble opinion, the gameplay is not good enough for me to support this game, the game needs attunements on gear stats, mobs health, companions overall stats, and so on...

There are other things that bugs me in the game like about 70% of the game plays in dark areas (if you tell me to increase my brightness you must be rly dumb, when you make a game in pitch black areas to make you use a source of light, you don't just increase the brightness of the game). This constraints you to play one handed most of the time. I know you can drop the lantern on the ground but somehow the lighting gets rly bad as soon as you put the lantern on the ground.

I believe the shield bash is meant to be a guard break, but even with the light attack on the quickest one handed weapon sometimes mobs will be guarding again before can even take advantage or guardbreaking.

There are other questionnable decisions that were made that IN MY OPINION (AGAIN) made the game worse than what it could have been.

I'm a huge fan from the Souls series, and I also know myself I'm not very tolerant when it comes to things I don't like in video games, but I'm not dumb to a point to say that every other game but Dark Souls 1 2 & 3 or Demon Souls etc... are trash, I'm not that stupid.

If you guys have any questions about the game or want to debate on something related to Ashen I'd be very happy to respond and chat with you.

I've found the split to be about 50/50 so far between dark and light fighting. It's a clever mechanic because it forces you to worry about upgrading two weapons instead of just maining a giant two hander for the whole game.

The default lantern brightness is definitely sad. Have you got the upgraded version(s)?

I think I had the best lantern available, I had 3 different ones and I was using the one with the highest Lumens rating, I don't remember its name.

My thoughts too, really enjoying the game so far.

My biggest beef is how unreliable your AI companion can be. I've had times when they just don't show up at all, or get stuck on scenery when I'm in a "downed" state leaving me to die.

Other than this, and some monotony with the loot ( how much moss does one man really need?!) It's easily the best "Souls Like" I've played. It perfectly captures the strange atmosphere of Dark Souls, and mechanically it's a perfect match.

When I got in the second area for the first time, I immediatly looked for a way to come back to the village and I quickly realized I only had two options, that one consummable that sends you back to the village or death. It was an exciting idea that when you go deeper and deeper into the outerlands that you had to make a decision on when you want to go back because I had no way to buy those items and I thought that they would come in a limited quantity. And then I killed the boss of the 3rd area, unlocking the fast travel between certain """"bonfires"""". I wish they would have fully commited to this idea/mechanic, it would push us to make more decisions on when to """"bone back"""" or keep going deeper.

Also, one thing that disappointed me a little, when you walk by the """"bonfires"""" it refills your health and your """"estus flask"""" charges without making the ennemies respawn. BUT, sometimes the ennemies would respawn over time without me tping back to the village or using any """"bonfire"""", it felt like a very bad way to design the dungeon crawling part of the game or even the open areas explorations, just walk back to the stones and you're fine.
