Question on steal
Hello All,

Here's a a quick question on steal skill. Is it possible for a character that does not tag it to be able to get steal to level 4 and above?

On most of my runs, I make Faythe the dedicated thief because of the skill monkey ability. I never tag the skill.

There's a pistol to be stolen on the table in the Factory but it requires 5 in steal. I am never able to get Faythe to level 4, let alone 5.

You can get to 4 by the Habitat, either by using the Skillmonkey feat or the Zen mutation, or a skill token in the Maintenance area.

You CAN get to Steal 4 before you leave the pit without Tagging.

1. Spend 1 skill point on Steal during character design
2. Take 10 INT at build and install Neural Uplink implant (for 40% experience bonus)
3. Take Skill Monkey
4. Do all Steal 2 / 3 activities prior to leaving act 1
5. Get Mental Fortitude as Mutation for 20% skill bonus

This gets you just over Steal 4 - working through all the stuff to see if Steal 5 is achievable before act 2.

Don't sweat it simply have Jed tag it and get Jia to coach him... that pretty much covers everything you want...otherwise for the stealth portions if you are the sneaking specialist all you need is a 4 so Jia+skill monkey&mental fortitude gets you covered on that front
As to how will he survive after that is just as simple: make him a melee build and pick up warrior&tough bastard and hes back up to snuff with the rest of the crew.
Then there is also Faythe that can clock her implant to get another skill tagged later if she wants balance out the steal tag.
Anyways pickpocket so far will only net you cash so worst case scenario you will be short around 1k.
As for getting yourself to 5steal without a tag id seriously forget about that particular option as it will likely come a time in the future where a 7 or an 8 check will come along for a real nice weapon and there will be f all you will can do about it with your 5steal :steammocking:
PS:don't expect a joy ride if you go skill monkey&mental fortitude on yr MC tho...its a harsh life out there in combat being the guy without combat specialization.

Managed to reach steal 4 with the above mentioned (skill monkey, zen mutation, +1 on steal at chargen), later on in Habitat reached steal 5.

Also there is a steal option of a sleeping person in church district that is labeled as steal 5, but for some reason steal 4 worked (you need sneak 4 to get into the room first)

FYI, the experience bonus from Intelligence / Educated does not impact the rate of skill growth like Mental Fortitude does.

Only Skill Monkey (+25%) and Zen Mutation (+20%) work

hmm, maybe I have missed a dialogue steal option somewhere? I have done all this but my steal is lvl 3 and about 73 exp short of lvl 4. Is there a checklist for this anywhere? would like to get to lvl 4 before fighting regulators (the last quest I have left before factory, I think) as they have a lvl 4 steal in a stealth section which I assume will disappear after the fight.

BTW, something to keep in mind is that we'll do a skill LP pass once we add most of the game content to balance its progression. Gains will be different, skill checks will change, etc.

I want to say that I certainly don't mind coming across skill checks that are impossible when you first find them, unless you have a team member heavily specialised in it (the initial point + tagged + trained by doing every skill check for it up to that point). Just as long as its possible for non-specialised people to put in extra effort and have to back track to areas for the exp, maybe even multiple times.

Almost like you can be born gifted at something and breeze through on that one thing, or you can put in some hard time and work to eventually reach the same result. So for me a perfect balance would be:
Someone with their player and/or teamates all have tagged utility skills will be able to do any utility functions they come across with minimal to no backtracking. However might need to pick and choose their violent confrentations, going around to find weaker battles to train them up to eventually fight the harder ones.
Where as its the opposite for people who tags all combat skills. They can take on almost any fight they come across, however will barely be able to use utility checks until they backtrack back and forth between maps to train on the lower ranked checks spread out in different areas. Only being able to open the hardest ones if they find all the easier ones first. (though I feel dialogue skill exp gain shouldn't be a determining factor, but rather a small bonus)

On possible changes to skill use btw, I wouldn't mind if steal was uniquely a % chance. As it is the only utility skill that depends on the perception ability of the one you are stealing from. Though then again, I realise with this type of game, having it be straight % based would just have a lot of players save scumming every steal check. Effectively negating any need to invest in it, apart from saving yourself a bit of time and frustration.
yeah man i F%$#ing HATE % chance it takes me straight out of the game and i save scum because i don't feel like its fair lol please no % chance ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!! im on my knees begging here!!! i especially hate when weapons are crafted % chance or in any way have there stats based on % chance. Expeditions Rome did that BS, i stilled played it all the way through but save scumed the poop out of it because who wants some ♥♥♥♥♥ weapon! Also Waistland did that with their weapon accessories, you would have to break down old gear and you had a 1% chance of getting the good parts.... pulled me straight out of the game!!! and its not realistic, the best gear should just be very expensive like in real life!!!!!! i remember the old Shadowrun game for SEGA that did it the right way, the best decker board was like 500k and the best guns were super expensive, i still get a warm fuzzy feeling thinking about it, saving up your money just like real life is intoxicating!!!!! i dont understand why it isn't more common in RPGs and the way you would spend karma to level up was better then any game i have ever played, you had to save up karma and then find a hotel to sleep in for the night and that would open up the attributes and perks screen, it made you feel like you were living in the game and made finding a hotel to sleep so much fun and incredibly immersive!!!!! another incredible thing they did was hide underground weapons shops so they were very hard to find and the rush you got when you found one was epic and then looking at all the super expensive weapons and gear that you really had to save up for was intoxicating similar to looking at the first civilizations tech tree chart when it would come in the box as a paper fold out, my brother and i would fight over it... ah good times! they also hid the underground hospitals for cyber implants really well and the best ♥♥♥♥ was 200 or 300k and jobs were only paying a grand at most so it made the game so rewarding. there were legal gun shops and legal hospitals out in the open easy to find with mostly cheap gear. it blows my mind more RPGs didnt copy Shadowruns first game, even the newer Shadowruns are not even close to as good as the old sega version.....

So thats how i really feel!!!
I would be willing to donate a grand if you guys could implement any of that into Colony ship. My son is learning how to write code because he wants to make games and hopefully some day we can develop a Shadowrun inspired game, to bad they gave up on Shadowrun because it has sooooo much potential!!!! i wounder how much they would sell the rights for?

I think they should balance all LP gains/skill checks, so if you don't get tagged you may be soft locked out of content (i.e. get the chest unlocked later, but still possible), and only few things should be hard locked.
