Quest Jumping Through Hoops - Impossible (for me)!

I am trying to retrive the sample of fungus but I find the difficulty overwhelming. I use Stasis grenade on the right side Creepers but it's never enough. My strongest follower is Cobra, her actions points run out very fast and then I get attacked by the Floater-panic thing and I can't do anything. I have custom difficulty (medium) and can't change it for some reason (why?). Is there better weapons somewhere? There should be the Annihilator SMG, where can it be found? I can't even buy energy ammo because nobody has them :(

You don't have to do the 3 creeper fight to retrieve the fungus sample, it's entirely optional. Difficulty can only be changed on a new game.

The fungus sample is right under the stairs before the fight. You don't need to actually fight any of the creeps.
