How important is the biotech skill?
I'm iterating through my initial setup and I'm landing in a spot where the difference is if I tag biotech on my main character or not. I'll use Faythe for most of my skills but she can't cover all of them and Jed is my other guy which I don't remember but I don't think he gets 3 tags does he? I'm left with a decision of tagging biotech or rolling without it, I only need 3 implants perception/intellect and squad and I don't know if I need biotech at high levels to overclock or upgrade/obtain implants, will I be ok?

I gave Jed biotech because he doesn't do anything else but shoot and hit people with his hammer, so I can distribute the rest of his skills in that area. No reason not to have one person specialized in each area.

Also biotech increases the amount your medkits heal for.

I'd say the most important effect is the implant upgrade chips that you won't be able to extract without high Biotech. They really pile up in terms of derived stat improvements. You'll get some as basic loot, but most need to be extracted.

Beyond that, other than giving you the access to all the implants you'd want quickly, it also gives you a nice monetary boost from all the implants you can sell, but you'll get enough exp to harvest most implants even w/o the tag. You'll want at least 3 Biotech on your stealth specialist for a single mission, but you can get that through doc's training in the Pit.

If you take Skill Monkey with Faythe, that should give her a nice skill exp boost, slightly mitigating the lack of tag in case of Biotech.

I've always tagged Biotech with Jed using an extra feat but in the next playthrough I'm gonna have Faythe grind it without tag and see where I land. I think the only 8 and 9 checks are in the lower levels of mission control, can't remember which implant upgrades they unlock though, but I doubt it's something game changing

Biotech is not worth the tag. I tagged it on Faythe and I'm now regretting it, because it came at the price of not having tagged electronics. The implants are so abundant that potentially delaying the acquisition of those gated behind higher biotech is no big deal and the medkits don't matter due to overabundance.

With skill monkey (and perhaps some tokens usage if you don't a lot of combat as decent chunk of biotech SP comes from 'freshly minted corpses') you can reach lvl8 and that is more then plenty for the best quality tokens you want to have:
https://colonyship.fandom.com/wiki/Implants click on each of them to see what lvl you need to extract each one...

Biggest use for biotech is getting implants from corpses, and the occasional conversation option (although they are rare). But the skill requirements for biotech chips are not that high, at least in comparison with levels checks for things like electronics and computers I've come across.

Kind of as outside of fully upgrading Romeo a 9 in both computers and electronics is plenty to unlock all of the nice top tier loot...
